Back in 2022, Sony officially announced their brand new loyalty program PlayStation Stars – in which players could earn points by purchasing games, acquiring trophies as well as engaging with other various challenges. Come 2025 however, the console manufacturer would officially discontinue the service, claiming that they “will continue to evaluate our key findings from this program, and are looking into ways to build upon these learnings”. Though yet to be officially announced, it appears as though Sony has started to test a new rewards program; with some users now receiving ‘free’ PlayStation Store credit for some of their digital purchases.
As claimed by multiple PlayStation users (and reported on by the publication PlayStation Lifestyle), Sony appears to be testing out what could be a new digital rewards program. According to those eligible, Sony is now offering $10 in store credit upon the purchase of a select number of digital titles.
Currently listed as a limited-time offer available until the 29th of September, the games featured as part of this promotion / program reportedly includes the following:
- Hot Wheels Infinite Rush
- Halloween: The Game
- Onimusha: Way of the Sword
- The Blood of Dawnwalker
- Star Wars Zero Company
- Mortal Shell II
- Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy
- Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol.2
It is worth noting that all of the titles featured are recent releases, having launched within the last month or so. Whether this is Sony’s answer to their defunct PlayStation Stars program remains to be seen, especially given that the console maker itself has not publicised the promotion beyond its PS Store listings.
Of course, it is also possible that the company is trying to entice users to adopt digital purchases in the wake of their announcement that they will soon stop printing physical discs. After all, one of the stated ‘benefits’ of going all-digital has been that it would allow for games to be cheaper – a result which we have to see come to fruition.
It will be interesting to see whether this promotion is a one-time-deal, or whether Sony is doing some early testing before making the program more public.
