A beloved yet traumatizing animated classic from the 1980s returned to the box office over the weekend. “The Transformers: The Movie” first brought Optimus Prime and the Autobots to the big screen in 1986 to duke it out with the Decepticons. So, to commemorate the film’s 40th anniversary, Hasbro and Fathom brought director Nelson Shin’s movie back to theaters for a limited engagement. It went quite well, despite forcing a bunch of ’80s kids to relive a devastating death.
“The Transformers: The Movie” pulled in $3.1 million this past weekend, which was good enough for seventh place on the charts. Zach Cregger’s “Resident Evil” ruled the box office with a $60 million debut, but this worked as a good bit of counterprogramming. It’s also pretty impressive considering that the cinematic animated take on “The Transformers” made less than $6 million in its original run back in ’86.
The movie centers on the Autobots, who must stop a colossal planet-consuming robot named Unicron, one of the strongest Transformers of them all, when it goes after the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. At the same time, Optimus Prime and the rest of the Autobot gang must defend themselves against an all-out attack from the Decepticons.
Aside from bringing Hasbro’s beloved toys to the silver screen, “The Transformers: The Movie” is remembered for traumatically killing Optimus Prime. It was a bold decision, and it had quite the impact on viewers at the time. Mind you, this was a movie made with children in mind, and they weren’t used to main characters being killed (and in a brutal fashion at that). But that’s part of the reason why viewers have a fondness for the movie four decades later. It goes hard.
The Transformers: The Movie remains a pillar of the franchise 40 years later
It’s worth noting that Optimus wasn’t the only casualty of this movie, either. The constant death in “The Transformers: The Movie” caught its cast off guard. Hasbro and Fathom were very aware of the scars left behind on children of the ’80s, dubbing this re-release “The Apology Tour” as part of a year-long 40th anniversary celebration of the film’s original release.
“Transformers” eventually revived Optimus Prime for the sake of some very unhappy kids, but that revival alone speaks volumes about just how impactful this movie was. That’s why, 40 years later, it remains a pillar of the fandom. This is an enduring franchise, and this animated film is a crown jewel. Yes, it’s cheesy and of its time, but it was also made with a great deal of care, with an incredible voice cast that included, among others, the late, great Orson Welles as Unicron.
Years later, Michael Bay would turn “Transformers” into a multi-billion franchise with his live-action movies. In recent years, though, the property has hit a few speed bumps. “Rise of the Beasts” became the lowest-grossing live-action “Transformers” movie ever in 2023, while the animated “Transformers One” majorly underperformed despite strong reviews a year later. As such, the “Transformers” film series currently doesn’t have much of a direction, even though Paramount seems hell bent on getting it going again.
If nothing else, the relative success of this re-release suggests the core fandom is still there and still passionate. With the right idea and the right filmmaker, the Robots in Disguise may yet reclaim their place in the greater pop cultural hierarchy.
