Project Motor Racing still needs a lot of updates, changes and fixes. That is known and publicly accepted by the Straight4 Studios development team, time and time again.

Further changes are expected imminently, a key one being a rework of the computer-controlled rivals, which will lead to larger grids for console players.

Currently, on PC, sim racers can compete against up to 31 AI cars. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, that’s only 15 (so 16 cars including yours), and was a common complaint since the game’s launch last year.

Significant changes to the AI’s performance, which still, after some changes, likes to behave erratically and hit the brakes in unorthodox places, are coming soon.

“We are working very hard right now on the AI in two steps,” said Aris Vasilakos, Chief Creative Officer, to Traxion at Gamescom.

“One is to make sure that the AI is balanced across all classes and all tracks. So it has the correct speed and the speed is identical to the way that a human driver makes speed out of the car.

“So they’re not just, you know, just fast in the corners and then slow on the straight or vice versa.

“Then, we are working in parallel to make the AI much lighter for the system, which is very important because that will permit us to raise the grid count a lot on consoles, and on the PC as well, and of course make better graphics, improvements on the frame rate and so on and so forth.”

When quizzed specifically about the console grid size, Vasilakos was emphatic in his response:

“Yes, absolutely.  It’s not just a plan.  We are working right now on that.”

Project Motor Racing has been blighted by performance issues, from inconsistent screen tearing to strange visual bugs. The creation team has been chipping away at these over time, and it would seem the amount of re rest of the experience

“We need to make the AI much lighter on the system, and this is specifically what we are working on right now.

“But even if we do that, if the AI is not balanced, who’s going to want to use it?

“So two fronts: balance the AI, make it have the correct performance and also make it even lighter for the system so we can raise the grid numbers.

“I’m not gonna lie. This is not a job that will happen in a month. It’s gonna take two or three months.

“But right now, as we speak, and already from last month, it’s been actively under development.”
