The fearful rumors about Dolly Parton‘s health in the last year have, apparently, been well founded, and the American music legend and pop culture icon has passed.
News arrived Tuesday morning that country music star and overall national treasure Dolly Parton has died at age 80. Her nephew Bryan Seaver made the announcement
“This video announcement was something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” Seaver said. “As her head of security for more than two decades… I have imagined the heaviness of this moment, but have not fully absorbed it until now.”
Parton’s last public appearance was in June, when she attended a ribbon-cutting event for Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop. For months, she had been complaining of health issues, feeling “swimmy headed,” and having some digestive and immune troubles. These led her to postpone and then cancel a planned Las Vegas residency, which further concerned her many fans.
Long known as a brilliant and prolific songwriter, Parton was perhaps best known just for her buxom blonde persona, crafted out of a backwoods upbringing in rural Tennessee, and a look she herself dubbed “Backwoods Barbie.” As the New York Times puts it, “Ms. Parton cannily exploited — and transcended — rural stereotypes and kitsch to fashion a down-home chic entirely her own.”
Parton racked up a total of 25 number-one hits on the country charts, and was inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — the latter in 2022 after some hesitation on her part, because she didn’t understand that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had inducted a broad range of artists who could not be called rock performers.
Parton was also honored at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2006, when her longtime friend Emmylou Harris said of her, “I can’t imagine anybody, especially in country, who doesn’t try to emulate Dolly in some way.”
Parton became a movie star in the 1980s, appearing in iconic films like 9 to 5and Steel Magnolias.
San Francisco fans rang in Parton’s 80th birthday in January at the Make-Out Room, complete with a Dolly look-alike contest. Her last appearance in San Francisco was a free show at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park in October 2005, which drew thousands to what’s now called Hellman Hollow — some hanging out of trees and perched precariously on hillsides to take in the show.
As Seaver says in the video announcement, “Sadness lies with us, not with Dolly. Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by [her late husband] Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens.”
Parton’s final public stage performance was at her namesake theme park, Dollywood, in March 2025, as Rolling Stone notes. Just 11 days after losing her husband, Carl Dean, Parton made an appearance on opening day of Dollywood’s 40th anniversary year, taking the stage to sing “Celebrate the Dreamer in You,” a song she wrote for the park’s 25th anniversary.
“She performed the song completely by herself on acoustic guitar, and we’re very fortunate that at least one fan captured it on their phone,” Rolling Stone writes.
