X-Men ‘97 (2024) Season 2 is giving us a whole season dedicated to Apocalypse and his time-spanning efforts to control the world. For many, this is a great return of one of the franchise’s best villains, but it’s also not the first time he’s appeared outside of the comics and terrorized the team.

Between movies and television, Apocalypse’s presence has been felt, whether it be in a cameo or an important role. But considering how many X-Men movies and shows there are, we decided to compile a list of where you can see him on the big or small screen. Find these titles on Disney+, Prime Video, and more!

When it comes to iconic superhero cartoons, nothing will ever beat the impact and epic quality of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-1997). While it redefined superhero cartoons and cartoons in general, the series also gave a fair amount of attention to Apocalypse.

Throughout the series, Apocalypse proved to be a prevalent threat that nearly ended the world on at least one occasion. Whether taking over new bodies, turning Angel into Archangel, or simply scheming for his next move, Apocalypse was always there and a perfect adaptation from the comics.

X-Men: Evolution (2000-2003) is one of the few X-Men shows to make it past two seasons, and it made the most of it, especially by redefining the narrative with a new story that balanced adult and teen-centric arcs. Apocalypse also got a slightly updated look in the series, as well as devoted time to be fleshed out as a villain.

Wanting to turn all humans into mutants, X-Men: Evolution is Apocalypse at his most dangerous, and the show wastes no time establishing it. It doesn’t have the same impact as the ‘90s show, but for Apocalypse alone, X-Men: Evolution should be checked out.

Wolverine and the X-Men (2009) suffers from being a promising X-Men series that ended just as it was taking off. Seeing Logan in a leadership role was an exciting hook, and the fact that we saw them revisiting heroes and villains meant that we didn’t have to waste time with origins.

Apocalypse could’ve had an amazing iteration in this series but was unfortunately relegated to cameos throughout, where he didn’t even speak. Since then, all we’ve been able to do is wonder what could’ve been.

X-Men ‘97 Season 2 is finally giving Apocalypse the attention he deserves, but before that, he had brief cameo appearances in Season 1 as both En Sabah Nur and Apocalypse, but Season 2 took things up a notch.

We are finally getting a definitive retelling of his origin that ties to the larger Marvel universe while somehow making him scarier than he’s ever been. Of all the versions of Apocalypse that there have been, nothing beats what X-Men ’97 brought to the table.

Briefly teased in a post-credits scene in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), Apocalypse made his first full appearance in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016). Played by Oscar Isaac, this version of the character is famous for waxing poetic about mutants and their rightful place on Earth. However, for as powerful as he is, he’s also wildly underused.

From a misuse of his powers to an origin that’s barely explored, this version of Apocalypse isn’t received as well as others, but he still makes history as the first live-action version we’ve seen. The only hope is that as the MCU progresses, we eventually see another version of Apocalypse on the big screen again.
