Twitch, Amazon face lawsuit over using streams to train AI

Lawsuit seeks damages for affected streamers and an order preventing Amazon from continuing the alleged practice

Amazon is facing a class action lawsuit over allegations that Twitch used streamers’ content to train artificial intelligence models without their permission or compensation.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of millions of Twitch creators, claims the company commercially exploited livestreams that users had produced for the platform.

The suit has been filed against Twitch and Amazon stating that the companies violated the terms of agreement when they used livestreams for training AI models without the consent of users.

The suit is seeking compensation for affected streamers and an injunction to prevent Amazon from continuing the same practice.

The legal action comes after Twitch faced criticism when it announced in August that creators could opt out of having their content used for generative AI training.

The issue could affect a significant volume of creator content. Twitch streamers reportedly produced more than 215 million hours of livestreams during the first few months of 2026, giving Amazon access to a vast pool of video and audio material.

The lawsuit argues that streamers should not have their work used commercially to develop AI systems without their knowledge, consent or compensation.

Amazon and Twitch have not publicly commented on the lawsuit.

Twitch has previously claimed that creators’ audio will be used to “refine models that generate speech to text”. This process, according to the company, can be used to optimise automatic subtitles on Twitch and Amazon videos.

However, Twitch’s product chief, Mike Minton, previously revealed some doubts regarding whether or not users’ content had already been used for the AI training process prior to the introduction of the opt-out option. Minton claimed that he did not know what had been done by Amazon in terms of model training and what data was used.

If the creators wish to prevent their content from being used for the generative AI training process, they can turn off this optionn
