Free Marvel Game Hailed by PS Plus Subscribers as “Perfect”

Over the last decade, Marvel games have been pretty consistently solid. Seldom are they in the Game of the Year conversation, but seldom do they flop. To this end, over the last decade there has only been a single high-profile miss, and that was 2020’s Marvel’s Avengers. There wasMarvel vs Capcom: Infinite in 2017, which disappointed many. By contrast, there have been several strong Marvel games during this time, including Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Beyond Spider-Man, there have also been Marvel Rivals, Marvel Snap, and Marvel’s Midnight Suns.

What you don’t really get from a Marvel game is a good story/narrative. The Spider-Mangames do a lot really well, but writing, characters, and narrative have never been a strong point from Insomniac Games compared to gameplay. There was one Marvel game in the last 10 years with a bona fide great story, though, and this was Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix’s action-adventure game from 2021. For those who do not know: Eidos Montreal is best known for the Deus Ex series. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t the studio’s best work, as evidenced by its 78-84 Metacritic range. This is solid, but not the studio’s best marks. Where this game shined, though, was in its narrative, hence why it won Best Narrative at The Game Awards that year. This is partially thanks to Mary DeMarle being the narrative director. DeMarle was notably the lead writer on both Deus Ex: Human Revolution and its 2016 sequel Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

All of this is to say, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is an often overlooked game, even within the pantheon of Marvel games, but over on the PlayStation Plus Reddit it’s been getting its flowers. To this end, a post dedicated to the game is one of the top posts on said Reddit page last week. And this post has big praise for it, calling it “a great game,” and describing its music and abilities, in particular, as “perfect.”

Of course, the sole opinion of a PlayStation Plus subscriber isn’t that noteworthy, but the popularity of the post confirms it’s not an isolated opinion. Meanwhile, many of the comments echo the sentiment as well.

“Completely agree in terms of the fun dialogue and character interaction, one of the best games regarding those things I played in recent memory,” reads one of the top comments. Another adds, “The dialogue is incredible.”

Right now, any PS4 or PS5 user with a PS Plus Extra or PS Plus Premium subscription can check out the Square Enix game at no extra charge. Those who do should anticipate a game that is about 15 to 30 hours, primarily depending on how much side content is engaged. This is a pretty decent length, though it comes nowhere near the 150-hour RPG that was recently added.

Those interested should probably check it out sooner rather than later because it’s been in the catalog since June 2022. This is a long time by the subscription service’s standards, and suggests it could leave sooner rather than later.
