Pokémon Gen 2 could be next to return as Nintendo drops glaringly obvious tease

Pokémon fans are patiently waiting for more classic games to drop on the Nintendo Switch/Nintendo Switch 2.

Earlier this year, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen were re-released, and are even getting Pokémon Home support later this year, with a free, special ‘mon for those who complete their respective Pokédex.

Now it’s believed Gen 2 is next, after Nintendo shared a potential tease

The Nintendo America X account shared a screenshot of two players recreating one of the in-game encounters for Pokémon Gold and Silver.

Its caption read: “Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, the other is gold.”

Now before you go digging out your tinfoil hats, this probably doesn’t mean what you think. Nintendo even challenges players below the post to “recreate memorable moments” in their own Pokopia playthroughs.

Pokémon Pokopia is an amalgamation of several Pokémon gens, allowing you to build towns and communities reminiscent of iconic locations in the series, or your own stylised versions. So, in all likelihood this is just the Nintendo team having a bit of fun with the game, but we can dream, right?

Tease or not, it certainly got fans riled up, many of which commented to share their frustrations.

“The fact that you would even do this when you know how much your fans want a Gold and Silver remake is diabolical,” read one of the comments.

One comment even took a dig at The Pokémon Company’s recent decision to discontinue one of its best services: “Nice reference, but I can’t ‘keep the old’ when Pokémon Bank is shutting down soon already with no alternatives. I’d greatly appreciate an offline option, may it be a Link-Cable or whatever for 20$, but please provide an ‘option’ so older generations aren’t cut off completely.”

Are Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emeraldgetting a re-release?

While the jury is out on whether Nintendo’s Gen 2 post is seemingly just a bit of fun, the timing is certainly curious.

Earlier this month rumours were started regarding a re-release of the Gen 3 Pokémon games, with threeset for a return.

Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald are all expected to drop by the end of the year, which would make sense given how they’re Game Boy Advance titles like Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.

That said, it would be weird to re-release some Gen 1 games and then immediately jump to Gen 3. Sure the graphical differences wouldn’t feel as jarring, but Pokémon Gold, SilverandCrystalall have their fans, with the latter potentially being the best game in the series.

Again, there’s no confirmation that we’re getting anyadditional Pokémon re-releases this year, but given how Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreendominated the Nintendo Switch charts for weeks after launch, we’d be surprised if The Pokémon Company isn’t already planning for the future.
