Sony Interactive Entertainment is sending out updated user agreement notices to PlayStation account holders, explicitly reminding them of a harsh reality in the modern gaming landscape: you don’t actually own your digital games.

According to reports, the emails clarify that purchasing a digital title from the PlayStation Store grants users a revocable license to access the content, rather than actual ownership of the media. This means that if an account gets banned, a service is shut down, or licensing agreements expire, players could instantly lose access to their entire digital library without any recourse. While this has technically been the standard legal language for digital storefronts for years, Sony’s decision to actively highlight it right now is proving to be incredibly controversial.

The reminder comes at the worst possible time for the gaming giant, which is currently facing significant pushback over its future distribution plans. Earlier this year, Sony announced that it will officially stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs starting in January 2028. The move toward an all-digital ecosystem has infuriated game preservationists, collectors, and budget-conscious gamers who rely on the used game market to recoup costs.

Despite the widespread outcry, Sony appears determined to push forward. The company is already slapping warning stickers on new PS5 console boxes, explicitly informing shoppers that retail stores will transition exclusively to digital games by the 2028 deadline.

Furthermore, any hopes that Sony might walk back the decision seem highly unlikely. Sony has also been restructuring its primary disc manufacturing facility in Austria for quite some time. The plant is reportedly receiving heavy investments in new technology to produce optical microlenses instead, meaning the physical infrastructure to print massive quantities of game discs will soon no longer exist.
