The first Xbox remains one of the most memorable consoles in gaming history, thanks to its instantly recognizable design and a standout library of titles. Now, 25 years after its original launch, this classic piece of hardware is coming back though not in the way fans imagined.
Earlier this week, Microsoft unveiled a new product tied to its pioneering 2001 platform. Fans will soon be able to get their hands on a collector’s item as part of the brand’s 25th-anniversary celebrations provided they are willing to open their wallets.
Mattel and Microsoft Will Launch Exact Replica of the Original XBOX
While many had hoped for a retro relaunch along the lines of the NES Mini or the Neo Geo AES+, this release is strictly a buildable scale model. Still, for collectors and loyal Xbox devotees, it remains a highly attractive offering.
Microsoft made the announcement official across its social media channels, sharing preliminary details about the buildable replica, which is being produced by Mattel, one of the world’s leading toy manufacturers. The scale model faithfully captures the sleek, iconic aesthetic of the original console and comes packed with an array of accessories.
According to the official product description, the set includes a precise replica of both the original Xbox and its controller. Notably, both models can be assembled and feature realistic lighting effects, sound cues, and other intricate details. The Duke controller also boasts functional XYBA buttons.
Comprising a total of 3,509 pieces, the console-themed construction set will demand significant time to build. Mattel’s official website notes that the kit is recommended for fans aged 17 and older.
Beyond the console replica itself, the set also includes three dioramas inspired by some of the original Xbox’s most iconic exclusive games: Psychonauts, Halo, and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. The package also features 2.5 cm NanoWorld minifigures of Master Chief, Dagoth Ur, and other characters.
A Perfect Set to Celebrate XBOX’s 25th Anniversary
The Xbox–Mattel collaboration is scheduled to go on sale on October 16, 2026, perfectly timed to commemorate the console’s 25th anniversary. Pre-orders are already live across digital retailers, though the premium pricing may give some fans pause.
The scale model is priced at $323 USD on Amazon and the official Mattel Creations website, while Best Buy lists it at $329.99 USD. In Mexico, Amazon is offering the set for $5,601 MXN.
It should be noted that this replica is not the only Xbox-related collectible debuting this year as part of the 25th anniversary festivities. During its summer showcase, Microsoft also confirmed a special-edition Xbox Series X featuring a translucent design reminiscent of the original 2001 console.
In a gesture of goodwill, Asha Sharma, who took over as brand director earlier this year, succeeding Phil Spencer, announced that all event attendees would receive a complimentary unit of the limited-edition console.
