Superman is most likely who you think of when you hear the word ‘superhero’. He may not be the most interesting or multi-dimensional hero, but images of his flowing red cape, symbol of hope, and hands on his hip definitely cross your mind when you try to envision a superhero. You may prefer Batman, Wonder Woman, or Flash, but even they will tell you that they think Superman is the hero they all look up to. If you still have doubts about how popular he is, just remember that issues of Action Comics #1, in which he made his first appearance, consistently sellfor millions. However, while we’re getting used to copies of the issue selling for absolutely absurd prices, there’s a chance something similar might happen with one of his earliest collectibles.

Before we got the highly articulated action figures and and intricately detailed statues of Superman we have today, a company called Multi Products, Inc. created one of the first ever three-dimensional Superman collectibles in 1942. It seems Heritage Auctions has got their hands on one of them, and will begin taking bids for it starting August 25th. The Superman Brown & Red Promotional “Syroco” Statuette, as it’s called, was a promotional 5.5 inch figure that DC Comics sent out to comic distributors and retailers. It was made out of a molded wood-composite material, and is considered to be one of the earliest ever figurines of Superman. With an estimated 100 pieces created, it’s extremely rare and could possibly end up becoming one of the most valuable Superman collectibles of all time.
One Of The Oldest Superman Figurines Is About To Go Up For Auction
The figurine shows Superman in his Golden Age avatar, with his hands on his hips in trademark fashion. However, what really stands out to me is the way his cape flows. Considering how long ago it was made, and the materials used, the creators did a brilliant job of incorporating a glorious flowing aspect to it. Even the minute aspects, like his facial structure and the iconic spit curl, are clearly visible. There’s no mistaking that this is the Golden Age Superman. While it’s hard to think of another figurine that might be as rare and valuable as this one, DC gave 10-12 of the original 100 pieces the blue-and-red color scheme, making them even more coveted than this one. It’s highly unlikely that you’ll stumble upon them, so this brown and red figure may be your best bet at securing a piece from this historic line.
Unfortunately, this particular figure isn’t in great shape, nor is it graded, so that might work against its overall value. Apart from overall wear and tear, and deterioration over time, this Superman figurine had snapped from its ankles and was evidently glued together. That doesn’t mean it’s not valuable, though. Considering it was released only four years after Superman was born, it’s arguably one of the hero’s earliest and most coveted collectibles. It was created at a time before plastic and other synthetic materials became the primary materials in such collectibles, making it an impressive feat in detailing. Such pieces are truly rare to come by, and you can expect it’s price to go up, up, and away once bidding opens.
