On both big screen and small, Paramount has raked in a fair bit of gold with their live action Sonic the Hedgehog <a href="https://comicvibe.com/3-underrated-tv-series-on-peacock-you-should-watch-this-weekend-august-21/” title=”3 underrated TV series on Peacock you should watch this weekend (August 21″>series. As the blue blur does circles around Paramount’s other video game adaptations, the studio will be taking another dip into the Sega catalogue. This time resurrecting the arcade brawler Golden Axe as an animated series. Judging by the debut trailer, the streaming animated series will be a lot like all the other ones.
Starring Community’s Danny Pudi, Widow’s Bay’s Matthew Rhys, comedian Lisa Gilroy and upcoming polygonal Wolverine Liam McIntyre, the series follows a pack of fantasy warriors in their quest to separate Death Adder from his powerful Golden Axe. The classic beat em up series was standard fare in its sword and sorcery tone, but mountable creatures, big monster brawls and colorful realms stood out in arcade halls. The animated series’ adaptation seems likewise consistent with other streaming cartoons: With writers treating it like agonizing homework.
“We’re going to do what we do best,” says the chainmail clad Tyris Flare. “Face a series of progressively harder enemies until we have a big final battle with Death Adder.”
The trailer is filled with self-referential nods to how the original game is played and the general absurdity of existing in high fantasy. It’s consistent with much modern genre fare, seemingly embarrassed of itself for having to be created and lashing out with smarm. Fans do not seem overly pleased with this rendition either, exhausted by the Rick And Morty-like sarcasm. Insult to injury as the game series itself hasn’t been updated in nearly 20 years.

This Golden Axe series also exists in the shadow of other larger, better balanced approaches to farcical fantasy stories. That includes numerous high profile RPG collectives like Critical Role, the runaway success of Dungeon Crawler Carl and Paramount’s own Dungeons and Dragon movie, which is looking unlikely to get a sequel. Look I’d love a fantasy cartoon that looks like a Boris Vallejo painting too, but the odds are stacked against us.
