Luke Skywalker is returning to Disney+ this September, but the legendary Jedi won’t appear the way Star Wars fans remember him.
Nearly five decades after Mark Hamill first brought Luke to life in Star Wars (1977), Lucasfilm is revisiting one of the character’s biggest modern moments. This time, however, Hamill isn’t the performer behind Luke.
Disney is retelling part of The Mandalorian in LEGO form, complete with Din Djarin, Grogu, Moff Gideon, Dark Troopers, and a familiar Jedi arriving when all hope seems lost.
And while this isn’t the first time another performer has voiced Luke, the latest recasting is notable.
Luke Skywalker Is Officially Heading Back to Disney+
Lucasfilm is bringing Luke back in LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, an animated Disney+ special scheduled to begin streaming on September2.
Rather than telling an entirely new story, the special revisits memorable events from The Mandalorian. That includes one of the show’s biggest surprises: Luke’s arrival during the Season 2 finale.
Disney’s trailer saves Luke for the end.
The Jedi appears dressed in black and wielding his green lightsaber as he fights through Dark Troopers. It’s a LEGO recreation of the sequence that stunned viewers in 2020.
There’s one major difference, though.
Hamill isn’t voicing Luke in this version.
Mark Hamill Has Been Replaced
Let’s clear some things up.
Lucasfilm has not announced that Hamill has “permanently” lost the role of Luke Skywalker across the Star Wars franchise. Other actors have voiced the character in animated projects and video games before.
Instead, the replacement applies to this particular Disney+ project.
That’s notable because Hamill’s connection to Luke stretches back 49 years, beginning with Star Wars (1977). More recently, Lucasfilm brought Hamill back to voice LEGO Luke in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy (2024).
Hamill also returned for the live-action version of the scene this special recreates.
When Luke appeared in The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm used visual effects and a body double to present a younger version of the character. Hamill remained involved in bringing Luke back.
For LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm has instead recast the role. Eric Bauza will officially voice Luke in the new series.
It doesn’t erase Hamill’s 49-year history with the character or establish a permanent successor. It does mean Disney+ viewers are getting Luke Skywalker again without Hamill performing the role.
One of The Mandalorian’s Biggest Moments Returns
Luke’s inclusion makes sense considering what this special is trying to accomplish.
His appearance in The Mandalorian came when Din Djarin and his allies found themselves trapped aboard Moff Gideon’s ship. Dark Troopers presented a threat they weren’t prepared to overcome.
Then an X-wing arrived.
Luke tore through the Dark Troopers before revealing himself to Din, Grogu, and the others. He had sensed Grogu’s earlier call through the Force and came to take him for Jedi training.
The LEGO version follows the same basic sequence but adds some comedy.
After revealing his face, Luke discovers that Din and Bo-Katan don’t immediately recognize him. That allows LEGO Luke to remind everyone that he’s “kind of a big deal.”
It’s exactly the sort of joke that separates the LEGO version from the serious original scene.
The New Luke Still Looks Very Familiar
Even with a different performer, Lucasfilm hasn’t dramatically redesigned Luke.
His appearance follows what viewers saw in The Mandalorian. Luke wears black clothing and carries the green lightsaber associated with his post-Return of the Jedi years.
The Luke who meets Grogu isn’t the older Jedi Master audiences later encounter in the sequel trilogy. The Mandalorian takes place several years after Return of the Jedi (1983), putting Luke relatively close to the version audiences saw defeat Darth Vader and confront Emperor Palpatine.
The original Disney+ series had to account for Hamill’s real-world age. Animation doesn’t face that challenge.
LEGO can present Luke exactly as the story requires.
Disney+ Is Revisiting The Mandalorian at an Interesting Time
The September 2 release comes as Lucasfilm expands the Mandalorian story beyond its original television format.
The Mandalorian ran for three seasons on Disney+ before Din Djarin and Grogu jumped to theaters with The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026).
Now, the LEGO special circles back to the series that started it all.
LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian and The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026) are both scheduled to arrive on Disney+ on September 2.
That gives subscribers two different ways to spend time with Din and Grogu while putting Luke Skywalker back into their story.
Luke Skywalker Continues Beyond Mark Hamill
Mark Hamill will always have a unique connection to Luke Skywalker. He introduced the character to audiences in 1977 and returned repeatedly across movies, television, and animation.
LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian shows Lucasfilm’s willingness to use different performers when revisiting the character. Here, Hamill has been replaced as Luke’s voice in a Disney+ special that recreates a scene he previously appeared in.
That distinction matters. Lucasfilm hasn’t declared a permanent new Luke Skywalker or announced that Hamill can never return.
But when Luke ignites his green lightsaber again on Disney+ on September 2, another performer will bring the legendary Jedi to life.
