Portland, Oregon, and Lincoln, Nebraska, square off for the American Legion World Series championship on Tuesday night
Lincoln, Nebraska, needed a win-or-go-home victory on Sunday to get to the American Legion World Series semifinals, while Portland, Oregon, emerged from a three-way tiebreaker in its pool to advance. Both teams knocked off unbeaten pool winners on Monday and face off in the championship game of the tournament on Tuesday night at Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, North Carolina. Oregon won its only American Legion World Series in 1969 while Nebraska’s lone title came in 1939

Portland beat Tupelo, Mississippi, 3-1 on Monday, getting two unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie. Cooper Berta’s sacrifice bunt was fielded but thrown away, allowing Nolan Foglio to score from second base, and Jaden Tragesser singled home Berta for the insurance run. Oregon tied the game in the top of the fourth when Ben Foglio scored on an error. Berta picked up the win with two innings of perfect relief, striking out two, after starter Ryan Frye allowed a run on five hits over the first five innings.
Lincoln stunned Midland, Michigan, with a 10-0 run-rule decision in five innings on Monday night, breaking the game open on Dele Odulate’s grand slam in the second inning. Bradyn Erickson opened the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the first and later added a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Kalai Larsen drove in two runs as well while throwing four no-hit innings to get the win on the mound, striking out five.
Portland reached the World Series by winning the Northwest Region championship in Medford, Oregon, while Lincoln captured the Central Plains Region tournament in Mandan, North Dakota.
