If you enjoy superhero content, you’re going to love our list of new shows to watch this weekend. I’ve been looking forward to the top-ranked show on this list. It’s one of the <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/netflix-hbo-max-miniseries-worth-keeping-in-2026/?utm_source=syndication” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>main reasons to keep your HBO Max subscription. The show is part of the DC Universe, but it should appeal to mass audiences.
While Jack Reacher isn’t necessarily a superhero, he certainly has the qualities of a comic book character. The show returns to Prime Video for a fourth season. Other shows on the list include an absurd comedy, a period drama, and a documentary about a legendary soccer player. All five shows will be available to stream in the U.S.
Mourinho
A look at one of the most decorated managers in soccer history
I don’t know about you, but I caught soccer fever last month during the World Cup. It’s not that I don’t like soccer. I never found a team to root for other than the United States national team. I definitely have a better appreciation for it now and will seek out more games outside the World Cup. Documentaries like Mourinhoappeal to me because they teach me about some of the game’s most famous figures.
José Mourinho is, without question, one of the best soccer managers in the sport’s history. You don’t get the nickname “The Special One” for being a mediocre coach. Mourinho has league championships in four countries to go along with over 25 major trophies. Not everyone will agree with Mourinho’s methods. His personality might turn people off. At the end of the day, it’s hard to dispute Mourinho’s results.

My Brilliant Career
Finding love when you least expect it
For those who enjoy book-to-television adaptations, you’re in luck this week. Australian screenwriter Liz Doran adapts Miles Franklin’s My Brilliant Careerinto a six-part series for Netflix. Philippa Northeast stars as Sybylla Melvyn, the rebellious young woman from the Australian bush who dreams of becoming a writer.
Sybylla’s grandmother, Mrs. Bossier (Anna Chancellor), invites her to move into her estate. Sybylla wants nothing to do with high society and has no intention of finding a husband to keep her independence. Still, she moves there to gain inspiration for her writing. Love can find us in the unlikeliest places, and Sybylla might have found a potential suitor in Harry Beecham (Christopher Chung). My Brilliant Careeris like an anti-Jane Austen story, but it still packs some romance.

Tires season 3
Shane Gillis’ show finds its form
Shane Gillis is at the top of the comedic world right now. The comedian is coming off a record-breaking stand-up show at a football stadium. How do you follow up on that accomplishment? With a new season of Tires, of course. Early reviews suggest its the best season yet, which is a great sign for the future of the show.
The central relationship of the show is between cousins Will (Steve Gerben) and Shane Jacobs (Gillis). Will manages his father’s auto repair store, Valley Forge Automotive Center, and Shane works there as an employee. Will aspires to turn the store around, but making sure Shane doesn’t mess it up proves to be the more difficult task. The best workplace comedies are the ones where comedians get to be in a room together and riff. These conversations tend to generate the funniest moments. That aspect is the strength of Tires, and I hope it continues for more seasons.

Reacher season 4
The Big Fella finds himself in the middle of another conspiracy
Reacher is Prime Video’s version of “big dad energy.” It’s the type of masculine show that your father will love. Thankfully, people of all genders and ages can enjoy the show, which I do on a regular basis. Reacher channels the spirit of a Western—Jack Reacher strolls into a town, refuses to play by the rules, and thwarts the bad guys’ plans.
Season 4 is based on Lee Child’s novel Gone Tomorrow. While on the subway, Reacher (Alan Ritchson) notices something different about a woman, so he goes over to see what’s wrong. He believes that she might be a suicide bomber, but in a fateful twist, the woman takes her own life. Why? That’s for Reacher to find out. I can’t wait to see what impossible situations Reacher has to get out of with his bare hands this season. Plus, Reacherwill return for a fifth season.
The firstthree episodes of Reacher season 4are now streaming on Prime Video.
Lanterns
DC takes a crack at television
My knowledge of superheroes is fairly average compared to the people who grew up reading comic books. So, I don’t know much about the Green Lantern Corps besides the fact that they have a powerful ring and that Ryan Reynolds starred in a terrible movie about the character. However, Lanterns, a new DC show coming to HBO, looks like a crime drama set within a superhero universe, which is my favorite kind of story.
The HBO series follows Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), an iconic member of the Green Lantern Corps who must train his new recruit, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). The duo is summoned to Nebraska to investigate a murder, which may be connected to a larger conspiracy. The look and feel of Lanternshave been compared to True Detective. If that’s the case, I’m 100% in.
Lanternspremieres on HBO and HBO Maxon August 16 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
More shows and movies to watch on streaming
Calling all fans of The X-Files. Chris Carter has recut his 2008 movieThe X-Files: I Want to Believe. The movie, which releases on August 14, is more of a Frankenstein-style story with body horror. Elsewhere, Bear Grylls has a new survival show,The Chosen in the Wild, which is now available to stream on Prime Video.
