This moment was bound to come. We now have the surprise video game, the “dark horse,” the “sleeper hit” of the year. It’s called Big Walk, it’s a cooperative multiplayer title, and it’s available on PC, PS5 (included with PS Plus), and Nintendo Switch 2. It’s the latest offering from House House, the creators of the unmistakable Untitled Goose Game. It boasts an incredible 92 on Metacritic, and more and more players are raving about it and saying it should be among the contenders for Game of the Year 2026. Here’s why it’s so special.

    Exploration, puzzles, and guaranteed laughs

Big Walk is a puzzle adventure reminiscent of The Witness, Jonathan Blow’s acclaimed title. The similarity between the two stems from the concept of exploring a mysterious island filled with puzzles that you must solve to move forward. It’s a cooperative game, and you can enjoy it with a friend—or even 11! That’s right—games support 2–12 players. The conditions of the puzzles and their solutions vary with the number of players, so it doesn’t matter how many friends you have.

The game explains practically nothing. Instead, it drops us on the island, explains the controls, and within a couple of minutes we find ourselves in a very strange place—everything is abandoned, and we have only our friends for company. Proximity chat is key, since we need to be close to one another to communicate. We can jump, crouch, pick up objects, activate mechanisms, and lift our teammate to help them reach higher ground.

There are all kinds of situations we have to face: searching for keys, solving symbol puzzles, figuring out how to activate various mechanisms… The fun, once again, lies in the need to communicate for everything. For example, one of the first key items we have to collect is inside a glass urn. To open it, one person must hold down a button that’s very, very far away. The person who goes to retrieve it will be cut off from communication, since no one will be able to hear them from a distance. There are times when,to solve a riddle, the group needs to split up—but without losing communication. Plus, time passes while we’re on the island, and at night you can’t see a thing, so we also have to learn to find our way and be cautious, since we can only carry one item at a time.

Big Walk has become the game of the moment on its own merits. Plus, House House has released it at a discounted price (between $15 and $19, depending on the platform).

Its 92 on Metacritic speaks for itself: Big Walk is the big surprise of the year and is a contender for Game of the Year thanks to its brilliant concept
