Everything is not what it seems on Waverly Place.
The beloved Disney franchise ended its four-part final season with a twist few fans could have predicted, revealing that Alex Russo’s (Selena Gomez) beloved boyfriend Mason Greyback (Gregg Sulkin) died sometime before the events of the sequel series — an unprecedented move for the network, which has typically steered clear of killing off legacy characters.
The heartbreaking twist unfolds after the guise of a fairytale ending, when Alex — who previously went missing inside a magical portal — finds herself living in an apartment with childhood best friend Harper Finkle (returning guest star Jennifer Stone) on the day that her “boyfriend” is supposed to propose.
After a series of magical mixups, that boyfriend is revealed to be Mason, who appears at her front door. But as Alex gets excited over what she believes is an impending engagement and demands he get down on one knee, Mason clarifies the reason for his visit.
“I can’t propose to you. And you know why. Think about it. This isn’t how it’s supposed to be. Why can’t I propose to you?” he asks, to which she replies, “Because you’re dead.”
The news shakes her back to reality, and she worries that means she’s dead too, but Mason assures her there’s still time.
“When you went through the rift, you ended up somewhere in between. And I came here to help you get back,” he explains. “You have a whole other life, Alex. You got married. You have a beautiful daughter. And she needs you. That’s the life that you’re meant to live. You have to go back.”
“I can’t believe you came back to help me,” she tells him, and he confesses: “I’ll always love you, Alex Russo. And I’ll always be watchingover you.”
Wizards’third and final season, which aired on Disney Channel on Tuesday, picks up after Alex’s sacrifice during the season 2 finale, where she tackled the evil Lord Morsus and closed a magical rift, leaving her fate unknown but saving her family.
But before doing so, a long-hidden truth came to light: Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), the young wizard living with Alex’s brother Justin (David Henrie), is actually her daughter, whose memories — and everyone else’s — had been magically removed years earlier.
The spell was cast to protect them all — but particularly Billie, the strongest wizard of all time — from Morsus, who is revealed to be Billie’s grandfather determined to steal her powers and destroy the Russos forever.
Billie, for her part, spends much of Wizards’final seasonlooking for Alex and her father, Morsus’ son Damien Penwulf (Brandon Michael Hall), who sent himself to prison to help protect his daughter.
Luckily, all’s well that ends well for the Russo-Penwulf family and this beloved franchise. Billie ultimately finds her dad, just as Justin and Alex are reunited on an unnamed planet. The pair come face to face with Morsus, and while it initially seems like he kills Alex on screen — this is still a kids’ show, right? Why do we keep trying to murder Selena Gomez? — it’s revealed to be a fakeout, and the twosome escape.
Morsus does track them down on Staten Island, but the power of family ultimately defeats him for good, and the Russos end up back at the sub station together, exactly where they belong. Aww!
