During a recent earnings call, Sony’s Chief Financial Officer noted that discs are not the only factor distinguishing PlayStation from PC, and emphasized that their product is more affordable than high-end systems.

Since Sony officially announced the end of production for PlayStation disc games in 2028, fans have eagerly awaited the company’s response to the backlash regarding this decision. Sony has finally addressed the “strong views” expressed by its user base but has made it clear that they will not be reversing their decision. The company then reiterated its belief that discs are not a significant factor that distinguishes its console from a PC.

Sony Doesn’t Feel ‘Disc is the Factor to Differentiate’ Between PlayStation and PC

Spotted by Wccftech, during a recent <a href="https://www.investing.com/news/transcripts/earnings-call-transcript-sony-beats-on-q1-2026-profit-and-lifts-fullyear-outlook-93CH-4826976″ rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>earnings call, Sony’s CFO, Lin Tao, was asked by Goldman Sachs analyst Minami Hase how the company plans to differentiate PlayStation from PCs, especially as physical discs are disappearing. Tao responded, “We don’t feel that the disc is the factor to differentiate from the PC.” The CFO added that PCs offer “certain ways to play” that are “long-tailed,” while PlayStation’s strengths lie in providing curated content.

Tao added that another one of PlayStation’s strengths is providing a stable gaming environment. Then the CFO addressed affordability, stating, “Compared to the high-end gaming PC, our product is more affordable.” Tao concluded by reiterating that the company feels discs aren’t a “strong factor for differentiation” and going forward they can “coexist peacefully with PC games.”
