Warning: this article contains spoilers for episode 3 ofCape Fear.

    Key points

    • Juliette Lewis discusses playing Crystal in Apple TV’s Cape Fear after appearing in Martin Scorsese’s 1991 movie of the same name.

    • The actress said it was “very difficult” to keep her secret appearance in the show a surprise.

    • Lewis recently participated in a Q&A after a screening of the 1991 Cape Fear and apologized to the audience for the “disturbing” movie.

Juliette Lewis has returned to Cape Fear.

The Natural Born Killersactress joined Amy Adams and Javier Bardem in Apple TV’s new series based on the 1962 and 1991 movies of the same name (all based on John D. MacDonald’s novel The Executioners) in a surprise supporting role. The final episode of the 10-part series dropped on July 31.

Lewis occupies a unique position in the history of Cape Fear adaptations, as she previously played Danielle Bowden, the teenage daughter of protagonist Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte), in Martin Scorsese’s 1991 movie, and now portrays an entirely new character, Crystal, in Apple’s show. Her mysterious character was first introduced while wearing a mask so that the actress’ identity was concealed, and she dropped her disguise in episode 3 to reveal Lewis’ face.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Lewis reflects on her memories of the 1991 movie and shares how she came to appear in the new iteration of Cape Fear.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did you first come to be involved in theCape Fearseries?

JULIETTE LEWIS:I had worked with Nick Antosca, the showrunner, on one episode of The Act, and I knew I liked him. I knew he was smart and I knew he was a great writer. And we had a general meeting around 2019. And that’s when he first pitched the idea of Cape Fear as a possible series. And I knew if it was Nick, he was gonna make something special and unpredictable and super entertaining.

And so then some years went by and I saw that Amy Adams and Javier were cast. And I was like, “What? Is he not gonna call me? Does he not remember our meeting?” And I actually sent him an email very graciously just checking it out, going, “Hey, that’s so cool. You got some casting going. Remember we met on it?”

He offered me a role two days later. He was keeping it a surprise. And he had written a three-page backstory that he shared with me. I read one script and Nick’s pitch and I was really excited about Crystal and Max Cady’s history.

What attracted you to Nick’s pitch for your character on the series?

The potential to go toe-to-toe with Max Cady. I knew that that would be exciting for audiences with my history. How he introduces me was exciting, too, since I’m masked. I wanted to arrive and honor the thing he wrote — honor the surprise of it all and also really embody a whole new character.

I changed my voice to make her talk a little bit higher. Hopefully nobody guessed it was me, because people recognize me a lot from my voice.

And I loved that I would have scenes with Javier. Obviously I’m a huge fan of his. And I love the history. I mean, there’s so much to explore in Crystal and Max’s history.

How difficult was it to keep your involvement in the show a secret?

Very difficult. We worked hard. They left my name off the credits. I made sure not to promote the TV show in any way, like talk too enthusiastically about it. And so it was a real trip trying to keep this type of secret because it just rarely ever happens.

Mainly, it’s online. You have to be careful, ’cause I repost a lot and fans send me things. And so I had to make sure to just not be involved in any way for the show before, before my arrival in that third episode. They had invited me to the premiere, but I was doing a Broadway play and I actually couldn’t come. But I think had I come, it might have blown the surprise. So I’m glad I couldn’t come!

How conscious were you of the 1991Cape Fearmovie that you were in as you were giving your performance on the show? You’re obviously in a very unique position having participated in both.

Well, my character was so well-drawn that I had nothing to do with Danielle. But what was fun for me is to see, like, oh, the daughters, the daughter of Max is doing the theater scene that Robert De Niro did with the laughing. You know, where you get to see where it’s tipping its hat at certain things from the movie.

And then also it’s completely new in its own right of ways to terrify a family, like, through cell phones or people living in the walls or the acid dosing. To me, all of these are my biggest fears, so that’s just well done on how to stalk somebody.

It was really fun for me to also see Nick run with what I knew Scorsese was doing when we did the ’91 movie. He wanted to make the family more dirty, like, not innocent. And so Nick was carrying that even more with this family and the secrets they hold because that ultimately is what leads to their potential demise. And that’s unlike the 1962 one. That’s more of a good and evil. And the lawyer hides something, and that’s about it. And so it was neat to see Nick run with the things that Scorsese was doing in the ’91 version.

When was the last time you saw that ’91 version? Are you someone who watches your own work?

No, I don’t. But I did see it recently because I did a Q&A at a theater where I talked about it. And so I watched, saw it. And the first thing I did was apologize to the audience because it was so disturbing. “I’m sorry!”

But then I always feel inclined to tell people: we were all involved. You know, when you’re making something impactful for audiences, everybody’s creating it to make that impact. And so at the time, even though I was 18, I was treated as an equal — you know, I had a say in the berets I was wearing. When Scorsese wanted me to have a retainer because he wanted to age me down to make it more messed up when people saw it, we were all doing that in sync, in tandem. But people at the time, because they didn’t know me, they very much thought I was just some ingenue that was found on the street.

What did it feel like to revisit that movie in that moment when you were doing the Q&A?

Aw, it’s just good feelings. I think of Scorsese as someone I will only speak of in this poetic way, someone who gave me my creative wings. When you’re a creative person, you’re living your imagination a lot. I love characters. I love storytelling and behavior. So I was already intuitive on that level. But I didn’t have a lot of people yet to tell me I was doing a good job. I actually had the reverse because people, especially then, they liked to see carbon copies of the next thing.

And when you work with people of that caliber [like Scorsese], they like to see originals. They like to see fresh takes. And so Scorsese really had encouraged me to trust my instincts. And that was huge because they only developed further from there.

And then I worked with Oliver Stone, and he gave me even more freedom. So I was really fortunate to work with really good teachers who respected my opinion and gave me a lot of validation and freedom early on.

Is there anything about your technique or your approach to material that has consciously or unconsciously changed since you made the ’91 movie?

Yes. I don’t beat myself up as much because now I’m older and when you get a little older, you’re looking for more peace of mind. I’m not looking to suffer and torture myself. So when I was younger, I often thought nothing I was doing was good enough. Like, I wanna disappear or really transform, and I was never convinced.

They have language for it now. What is it? Negative self-talk. I do less of that. I don’t mess with that so much. It’s so unproductive.
