Over the past few years, there has been a steady rise in animationbrought in various media formats. This could range from typical family-friendly animation to the other end of the spectrum, with animation specifically for adults. As far as these titles go, they are some of the most successful and have seen a recent surge.
Those who have a Netflix account have seen major writers in the genre, such as Matt Groening, create fully new and original formats like Disenchantment, targeted to teenage audiences with its witty fantasy-based series. Big Mouth was a major player in adult animated series, scoring high age ratings across numerous countries due to its explicit and mature themes in each episode. Some of the same cast and creators from Big Mouth have also recently released a new title, Mating Season, another dominant player in this new age of eighteen-plus comedy.
There is going to be a new kid on the block very soon, but this one will be slightly different. A new adult animated comedy, Alley Cats, is set to hit screens on August 7 and features British comedian Ricky Gervais.
Gervais has a huge back catalogue so far in his career that focuses on turning everyday relatable situations into humorous tales that audiences can relate to, and despite the laughs every few minutes, almost always has a poignant message behind them. Creator of the global hit The Office has now turned his sights to a six-episode comedy unlike anything he has ever done before. It is sure to be a very blunt and brutal series!
Alley Cats focuses on a group of chaotic cats that roam the streets of Britain. In short fifteen-minute episodic bursts, we will get an insight into the lives of the cats and what they do in their day-to-day. Each cat has a totally different and unique personality, and I am sure some viewers will see relatability between their own pet cats and the ones in the show. Gervais voices the lead cat, Gus.
Several other actors and comedians are also set to feature in the series. Tom Basden, Kerry Godliman, David Earl, Tony Way and Diane Morgan will also star in the series. It is worth noting that many of the actors featured in this series also starred in Gervais’s Afterlife, another Netflix Original that ran for three seasons.
Alley Cats will reflect on Gervais’s talent, drawing on societal issues and surveillance of the everyday to fuel the message in each episode. It will be interesting to see the story told from a British perspective with typical dry British humour hit screens. It is great to see Gervais make a return to Netflix original work, and we cannot wait to see Alley Cats make its debut!
Original Comedy Alley Cats will be available to stream on Netflix from August 7, 2026.
