SEAL Team had a successful seven-season run, first on CBS, then on Paramount+ once it moved over to streaming, and now, it’s about to reach a new audience as it becomes available on Netflix in August.
Of course, the renewed interest will bring questions about the possibility of a Season 8 or some sort of revival, especially considering how popular reboots are these days. (It’s also what happened when both Suits and Animal Kingdom became hits on Netflix.)
Read on for everything we know about SEAL Team coming to Netflix, how it ended, and if anything’s been said about doing a Season 8.
When is SEAL Team streaming on Netflix?
The seven seasons of the military drama will be available to stream on Netflix beginning Tuesday, August 18.
Who’s in the SEAL Team cast?
SEAL Team, over its seven seasons, starred David Boreanaz (Jason), Max Thieriot (Clay), Jessica Paré (Mandy), Neil Brown Jr. (Ray), A.J. Buckley (Sonny), Toni Trucks (Davis), Judd Lormand (Blackburn), Raffi Barsoumian (Omar), and Beau Knapp (Drew). Thieriot exited in Season 6, with his character being killed off, after the debut of his CBS drama Fire Country (now going into its fifth season).
What is SEAL Team about?
The series follows a tight-knit unit of elite Navy SEALs as they train, plan, and execute dangerous, high-stakes missions.
How did SEAL Team end?
SEAL Team ended after seven seasons in October 2024, with a finale that saw most of Bravo, including Boreanaz’s Jason, continuing to operate. Though the possibility of Jason stepping back had come up more than once, it was actually Ray who took the job as the head of warfighter health. Sonny gave up his trident, while Davis got promoted, and the two finally were together and seemingly for good.
For executive producer Spencer Hudnut, that was the right ending because of “the message of hope,” he told TV Insider at the time. “Really, after seven seasons of putting our characters through so many ups and downs, whether in their personal lives, in their mental health, it just felt like we wanted to leave them in a place — I care about these characters. We’ve dragged them through so much. I wanted to get them to a place where it felt earned, but that they were all in places where they felt like we could see what came next for them. For Jason, while he’s continuing to operate, he at least has this new context of how he sees himself, how he sees his future, with Mandy’s help and his teammates’ help, he’s kind of battled through the shame that he was dealing with all season; that journey to Afghanistan actually really helped him kind of get on the path to atoning for his past.”
He continued, “And so it just felt like, what would be the point after 114 episodes to end it in a way that was anything but — it doesn’t necessarily need to be uplifting. I think there’s a tragic element to Jason still operating, but I think our military community who had watched this show is so important to us that to give a glimmer of hope and to remind people that the rest of us, that we need to do so much more for our men and women in uniform and vets… That just felt like an opportunity to really celebrate these characters, this community in a positive way.”
Why ‘SEAL Team’ Boss Didn’t Try to Get Max Thieriot for Final Season
Will there be a SEAL Team Season 8?
It doesn’t seem likely. For one, Boreanaz is leading a new drama on NBC premiering in January 2027, The Rockford Files reboot.
And, while Hudnut did tell us “never say never” when the series ended, Boreanaz did say in December 2024 that he’d “decided I didn’t want to do it anymore.” He also didn’t rule out reprising his role at some point.
“I think a movie is definitely a lot easier to do, but doing a series like this and the amount of work that it took day in and day out, it’s just too much, the pounding mentally and physically. It just really was a burden in a lot of ways,” he admitted to us. “I’m very fortunate and humble to have portrayed the character because I just leave it all out there for our veterans and for those people that have sacrificed for us. And to me, that’s what this series was all about, was giving back and shining light into these dark corners. But a film definitely will be, well, not easy to do, but it would be a lot better on the body, for sure.”
There had been talk of a movie at one point, but it didn’t happen.
What would’ve happened in SEAL Team Season 8?
While we won’t see more of the military drama, Spencer Hudnut did share some details with us about what would’ve happened, should the series have continued, after the finale.
“If we came back in a Season 8, they would find themselves in some serious trouble where the team needed to figure out a way to get themselves back together and get them out of that trouble,” the EP said.
He’d also wanted to have Omar try to reconnect with his son and explore more of Drew’s backstory.
“The reality is just the economics and what happens to a show after Season 7. I think as we were breaking this season, we kind of knew there was not a world where everybody was going to come back. And so I think you’ll notice that in the season, Drew obviously is a big part of the first half of the season, but we start really getting into Omar later in the season, to make people really want to learn more about him so that when we came back into a potential next season that Omar and Drew could pick up, do a lot of heavy lifting if some of the other characters didn’t return,” he explained. “We were just trying to keep the show going as long as we could, but we are very happy with where we’re leaving everybody if this is the end.”
