Fortnite is back on the iPhone in Brazil today with the launch of the Epic Games Store. However, Epic Games is calling foul on the nine-step process required for access.
Epic Games announcedI the launch of the Epic Games Store on iPhone in Brazil today:
The Epic Games Store is now available on iPhones in Brazil. Download it today to play Fortnite and Rocket League Sideswipe. Purchase on Fortnite through the Epic Games Store to get 20% back in Epic Rewards – a discount Apple’s rules prevent us from offering you on the App Store in Brazil.
Dive into the latest Fortnite Battle Royale Season, Runners, or explore one of the more than 345,000 games made by developers in Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN).
In a separate post, however, Epic Games explains the multi-step process required for accessing the Epic Games Store on iPhone in Brazil. Epic Games says Apple is intentionally making it difficult for users.
Apple has intentionally designed their policies to undermine competition from third party app stores and choice for consumers. They impose anticompetitive fees on third party app distribution, scare screens that create a burdensome install flow and ban alternative stores from launching on iPads.
It’s possible this could change in the future as Epic Games is lobbying for fewer steps.
These are very similar to the same evasive tactics we’ve seen Apple use in Japan. We’ve shared with the Brazilian competition regulator how detrimental the requirements and restrictions are to creating a competitive mobile app ecosystem on iOS.
In the meantime, you can read the full announcement and find instructions for accessing Fortnite on iPhone in Brazil here.
