Tom Chadbon, who has died aged 80, was a versatile character actor with a strong, resonant voice, familiar to viewers in dozens of classic television shows, including The Bill, Holby City, Taggart, Softly, Softly, Silent Witness, Father Brown, Heartbeat, Foyle’s War, and Midsomer Murders.

He was, perhaps, best-known for his role in Doctor Who as the trench coat-wearing Duggan, a pugnacious private detective hired to investigate a plot to steal the Mona Lisa, in the classic 1979 Tom Baker story “City of Death”, partly

Duggan ends up preventing the alteration of history by travelling back 400 million years with the Doctor and knocking out the villain, Scaroth, last of the Jagaroth, preventing him from stopping his past self from taking off in a damaged spaceship, the explosion of which kickstarted life on Earth. “Tom Chadbon was terribly funny,” Tom Baker recalled in 2009.

In 1986 Chadbon returned in “The Mysterious Planet”, the first segment of The Trial of a Time Lord, as Merdeen, Chief Guard on the planet Ravolox (formerly Earth) and a servant of the evil robot Drathro, who helps the sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) overthrow Drathro, preventing him from causing an explosion that would threaten the entire universe.

While his roles rarely caused ructions, Chadbon’s portrayal of the senior Crown Prosecutor Lenny Monk in the BBC series Crown Prosecutor (1995) came in for flak for an episode in which Monk was seen coaching witnesses – something, a CPS spokesman insisted, that would never happen in real life. “Monk is a bit of a maverick”, Chadbon conceded. “He hates the idea of the guilty going free. It is probably not politically correct to say so, but sometimes the technicalities of the law are such that justice isn’t done.”

In 2008 his role in “Moving Targets”, a three-part special of the cop show The Bill, brought the threat of a libel writ from the Respect MP George Galloway, who reportedly objected that Chadbon’s character, corrupt MP Paul Sagger, was based on him. “Viewers will have seen a man playing an East London MP with links to Iraq and Rock Against Racism being charged with smuggling,” aous.”

Thomas Richard Chadbon was born in Luton, Bedfordshire, on February 27 1946, to Thomas Chadbon, a banker, and Josie, née Cook. After training at Rada he made his stage debut as a philosopher in a 1967 production of Galileo at the Phoenix Theatre, Leicester, and went on to take mainly supporting roles in numerous plays, including at the Bristol Old Vic, the National Theatre and in the West End.

On television he had recurring roles in series including The Liver Birds, Wire in the Blood, Where the Heart Is and Casualty. He was popular with fellow actors and particularly enjoyed playing Martin, the partner of Jeremy’s “Mummy”, in a 2008 episode of the Channel 4 cult comedy Peep Show. His last television appearance was in 2017 as High Septon Maynard in the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones.

Chadbon’s film credits included The Alf Garnett Saga, Juggernaut, Shooting Fish and Tess. In 2006 he had a minor role as a stockbroker in the James Bond picture Casino Royale.

As a voice actor, Chadbon contributed to spin-off audio productions of Doctor Who, and in 2015 provided a hilarious deadpan narration to Channel 5’s Katie Price: In Therapy. “Katie’s life in numbers is revealing,” he intoned. “Eight boob jobs, thousands of glamour shoots, 10 celebrity boyfriends, three husbands, five kids, five kiss-and-tell autobiographies, 20 reality shows, hundreds of Twitter spats and more column inches written about her than Kate Middleton.”

In Tales of the Unexpected in 1983

In 1966 Tom Chadbon married Deborah, daughter of the 2nd Viscount Leathers. The marriage was dissolved in 1970 and in 1977 he married the designer Jane Hennessy. He had two sons and two daughters.
