Meta announces neural band handwriting recognition, delays international plans

Meta is delaying the international rollout of Ray-Ban display glasses with Neural Bands until the handwriting feature arrives in the United States.

Meta’s handwriting feature promises heads-up input on any surface while wearing the Neural Band. The feature, which includes “the ability to send messages to WhatsApp and Messenger by writing with your finger on any surface,” will launch first in early access in the U.S. for English.

Citing “unprecedented demand and limited inventory,” Meta said it was also suspending “international expansion into the UK, France, Italy and Canada, originally scheduled for early 2026.”

“The product waiting list has now been extended until 2026,” Meta’s blog post says. “We continue to focus on fulfilling orders in the U.S. while reevaluating our approach to international inventory.”

Meanwhile, Meta is rolling out pedestrian navigation for display glasses in Denver, Las Vegas, Portland, and Salt Lake City, adding support to dozens of existing cities. Meta also announced a “phased rollout” of a new teleprompter feature for display glasses.

In our review, we called the Display Glasses the “first generation of heads-up mobile computing,” and they won our 2025 “Best New Hardware” band for their groundbreaking interface.

Meta Ray-Ban Display Review: First Generation Heads-Up Mobile Computing

The Meta Ray-Ban display is an early sign of a future where mobile computing doesn’t mean looking down and pulling something out of your pocket.
