The long-delayed Spawn animated movie could be released soon. The film’s creator, Todd McFarlane, has confirmed that it is close to completion and is simply waiting for the right time to be released.
McFarlane revealed this during San Diego Comic-Con 2026. The Canadian comic-book creator also shared that Keith David and Mark Hamill have already completed recording their voice work for the movie.
The animated movie has been on the shelf for years. The Image Comics president plans to release it only after the live-action Spawn movie is released.
What Todd McFarlane Revealed About the Shelved Spawn Film at SDCC 2026
In an interview conducted at SDCC 2026, McFarlane told ComicBook that he does not want to continue the story in comic books and instead wants the next chapter to unfold on screen.
McFarlane said, “So I actually have a 90-minute animated show that’s all been drawn, minus the cells. All the voices have been done. Everything, like, we’re ready. All we need is a little bit of Foley, which is sound effects and stuff, and then hand it to a studio to actually draw, right?”
McFarlane said that the project was put on hold because of disagreements involving himself, the production team, and the lawyers. The Amazing Spider-Man artist added, “We could get their real fast, if we just take what’s in this box right now because I bought it all back.”
In the movie, Mark Hamill voices Detective Twitch. McFarlane recalled that the Star Wars-fame actor initially used a much heavier voice, which wasn’t what the former envisioned for the character.
After a couple of takes, Hamill asked, “So what do you want me to do?” McFarlane realized Hamill’s natural voice was exactly what he wanted for the role. Hamill replied, “So I just talk like me. That’s it,” and McFarlane immediately knew he had found the right voice for the character.
Keith David also returned to voice Spawn in the film. The Image Comics president stated that the veteran American actor’s voice has become synonymous with the character, much like Kevin Conroy became with Batman.
McFarlane also mentioned that David is always open to returning for animated projects. If the project moves forward, the actor would be the first one to hear from the Canadian comic-book creator.
No release date for Spawn has been announced yet.
