Veteran singer Kumar Sanu has opened up about one of Bollywood’s darkest phases, recalling the alleged underworld influence that loomed over the Hindi film industry in the 1990s. In a recent podcast, he admitted he was scared during that period and shared how he navigated the situation.
Kumar Sanu on underworld influence in Bollywood
Speaking on Subhojit Ghosh’s podcast, Sanu recalled how organised crime allegedly had a strong influence over the Hindi film industry. Reflecting on that time, he said, “I was scared because, at that time, something was going on. There was such a system.”
Acknowledging the frightening period, Kumar Sanu said, “A lot of things happened in front of my eyes, so I was scared. But I tried to reason with them. In return, they would ask for something – ‘Come and sing here.’ I went and sang. I had to do that. Afterwards, when they became my fans,” he said with a smile, “they would say, ‘If someone does anything to you, tell us; we’ll take care of it.’ I would say, ‘There is no need for you to look after me; I can take care of myself.'”
Apart from reflecting on his past, Kumar Sanu has also been in the news over his legal battle concerning his personality and publicity rights. Last year, the singer approached the Delhi High Court, seeking protection over the commercial use of his name, voice, and distinctive singing style.
