South Korea’s four biggest K-pop companies, HYBE, SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment and YG Entertainment, are coming together for Fanomenon, an ambitious festival and awards initiative designed to strengthen the global presence of Korean popular culture.

The project will begin with the Fanomenon Awards, scheduled from December 2 to December 12, 2027, in Seoul and Goyang. The 11-day event will combine awards, live performances, exhibitions and interactive fan experiences, placing fandoms at the centre of the celebration. The name Fanomenon combines “fan” and “phenomenon,” reflecting the role fan communities have played in K-pop’s international growth.

The main ceremonies and performances will take place at Seoul Arena in Chang-dong, a 28,000-seat concert venue expected to open in May 2027. Additional programmes will be held at KINTEX in Goyang, where visitors will be able to explore Korean food, beauty, fashion, webtoons, films, television dramas and animation through exhibitions and hands-on experiences.

The awards will recognise the year’s 10 most influential K-pop fan communities, with artists accepting honours on their behalf. Headlining performers are also expected to appear throughout the event, though organisers have not yet announced the participating artists or complete performance schedule.

Fanomenon will make its international debut in Los Angeles in May 2028. Organisers are positioning the overseas edition as a large-scale music festival inspired by Coachella, bringing together major performances and wider elements of Korean culture. The exact Los Angeles venue and dates within May have not yet been revealed.

JYP chief creative officer Park Jin-young said the project must balance cultural impact with commercial success. “The most important thing is that this will make money. It is impossible to attract global artists and companies to an event that does not turn a profit,” he said. Concerts will therefore be ticketed and supported by sponsorships, while public funds will help promote the festival and its related cultural programmes.

Culture Minister Chae Hwi-young said the goal is to create an event audiences worldwide will want to attend while building trust within the global entertainment industry. The government plans to assist with immigration procedures, safety management and overseas promotion.

The Korea Culture and Tourism Institute estimates that Fanomenon could attract 520,000 visitors, including 200,000 international tourists, and generate approximately 1 trillion won in economic impact. Organisers are also considering K-culture centres in major global cities, featuring performance venues and exhibition spaces. The plan represents a rare collaboration among K-pop’s traditionally competing powerhouses.
