    Review: Primal “Meat Feast”

    overview:

The third season of Primal continues on Adult Swim with the latest episode, “Feast of Flesh.” Spear encounters a terrifying flesh-eating ghoul, but his friend may not be far behind.

    Our view:

In the last episode, we saw Spear deal with the forces of nature. This time, he comes face-to-face with creatures lurking in the shadows. Of course, being a corpse reanimated by magic, he fits in perfectly. Unfortunately for him, he encounters a hungry faceless ghoul who thinks he has enough to eat.

But first of all, we are greeted with the calm before the storm. Spears wanders through the lush landscape, where he becomes fascinated by local insects. In fact, they begin to evoke memories in him, such as that he once had an animal companion himself. Immediately, he follows such bugaboos as if they were his new companions. In a tense moment, Spear saves his insect friends from a hungry chameleon. Without saying anything, this animation will make viewers happy to see a living grasshopper again.

Unfortunately, the sweet moment comes to an end when Spear falls into the tunnel. Soon he finds himself in a fight for his life, for lack of a better term, with a hungry mole-like predator. They may be small, but there is strength in numbers. And as they pile up on top of him before a commercial break, Spear learns the importance of quantity over quality.

However, Spear wakes up to find that the creatures have left him hanging where they keep their leftovers. Conjure eerie images of hanging, bleeding corpses, displaced organs, and feasting creatures. Spear has even lost the flesh on his arms. It quickly becomes clear to the viewer that the only reason Spear is still kicking is because he can’t kill something that’s already dead.

Fortunately, just as Spear’s new friend Cricket arrives to help, the cavalry arrives and drives the creature into a frenzy with its noise. Spears also learned that it’s helpful to have sharp bones on hand.

Tragically, Spear’s insect friend dies in the conflict after paying off his debt. Losing his new friend, Spear is forced to fight the same senseless battles with the ghouls around him, and emerges victorious in a truly terrifying manner.

However, things take a turn for a tender moment when Spear appears to be mourning his deceased friend and preparing a grave made of rocks. The moment was somewhat ruined as one of his organs fell out of the hole in his torso. Fortunately, there are many spare parts around him.

As he ventures into the light, he encounters a number of identical bugs, hinting that his friend may continue to live on in spirit. Of course, this and his new tooth necklace remind Spear of his old friend Fang.

Overall, despite the spooky nature of the episode, there is a touching story at its heart. Fans have never been happier to see a bug arrive on the scene, and equally sad to see it squashed.
