Google Product Generation It can be difficult to keep up with the flood of AI. Even if you try to avoid it all, there are some features that still affect your face. Case in point: Introduction to AI. This AI-powered search experience has a reputation for getting things wrong, but you may soon notice some improvements. Google says AI Overviews will be upgraded to the latest Gemini 3 model, which has more conversational elements.
Just in the last year, Google has significantly expanded the number of searches where AI overview appears at the top. Currently, chatbots almost always have answers to queries, which mainly rely on Google’s Gemini 2.5 family of models. I had no issues with Gemini 2.5 as a generative AI model, but Gemini 3 is a little better in every metric.
Of course, there are multiple versions of Gemini 3, and Google doesn’t want to know specifically which version shows up in searches. What Google is saying is that AI Overview will choose the right model for the job. So if you’re looking for something simple with a large number of valid sources, AI Overview may manifest something like Gemini 3 Flash without running a ton of inference tokens. For complex “long tail” queries, you may want to tighten up your thinking or move to Gemini 3 Pro (for paid subscribers).
