Good news for fans of the Japanese mega-franchise Gundam —the planned Netflix film has avoided the all-too-common development hell fate of countless adaptations and reportedly wrapped principal photography.
For those unfamiliar, Gundam— a sci-fi series that began in 1979 with the anime Mobile Suit Gundam and has since spawned dozens of comics, TV shows, and films — revolves around a story of giant mecha robots, led by Gundam, in a military setting.
According to a report from What’s on Netflix, Gundambegan principal photography back in April and held its wrap party in mid-July, having filmed mainly in the locations of Brisbane and Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. The film is being made by Netflix in a production partnership with Legendary Pictures, which celebrated recent wraps on Godzilla x Kong: Supernova (2027) and the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Along with Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, Christy),Noah Centineo(To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Street Fighter) will serve as co-lead in the film, written and directed by Jim Mickle(Sweet Tooth, Hap and Leonard).
In addition to its two leads, Michael Mando(Better Call Saul, Spider-Man: Homecoming), Jason Isaacs (The Death of Stalin, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris), Gemma Chua-Tran (Heartbreak High, Back of the Net), Jackson White (Tell Me Lies, Ambulance), Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool & Wolverine, Death Stranding 2), Nonso Anozie (Game of Thrones, Sweet Tooth), Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton (Euphoria, The Umbrella Academy), Oleksandr Rudynskyi (The Agency, Rock, Paper, Scissors), andIda Brooke(Dune: Part Three, Silo) co-star in the film.
The live-action film, which is set to premiere some time in 2027, is far from the first Gundamproperty to appear on Netflix. Previously, the platform picked up the exclusive rights to the animated series Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance(2024) and the film Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway (2021).
