OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. —Fans of comics, cosplay and fantasy worlds will have a chance to dive into pop culture under one roof when the Mini-Con and Wheeling Wizarding Fest returns to the newly renovated YWCA in Wheeling.
The event is billed as a celebration of comic books, superheroes, fantasy, wizarding worlds, pop culture and live-action role play. Attendees will be able to explore two full floors of vendors and exhibits featuring artists, creators, collectors and fandom-focused businesses.
Ron Scott Jr., director of cultural diversity and community outreach at YWCA Wheeling, said the goal is to bring convention-style experiences to the Ohio Valley without requiring travel to larger cities.
“To me that’s the main point. That Wheeling and the Ohio Valley is a place that also cultivates these small subcultures that people are really, really into. You don’t have to go to Morgantown, you don’t go to Pittsburgh, you’re not going to go Columbus. We have come up with conventions locally that I think will benefit people. And you’ll be able to get whatever those big city experiences are and you’re going to be able get them here,” Scott said.
Organizers say the festival will include everything from magical wands to superhero gear, along with comics, crafts and cosplay creations.
The Mini-Con and Wheeling Wizarding Fest is scheduled for July 25 from noon to 5 p.m. at YWCA Wheeling. More information is available at https://ywcawheeling.org/events/.
