Who keeps the superheroes safe at Comic- Con? Meet the medic staff

SAN DIEGO (FOX5/KUSI) — Comic-Con and all its exhibits, attractions and glory have arrived in downtown San Diego, even taking over the Gaslamp Quarter sign this year.

The weekend brings in more than 135,000 attendees for Comic-Con, and this year its met with a heat advisory, but the medic team is prepared.

It’s a job only fit for a superhero.

McKenna Marquis is the CEO of Event Response Services of San Diego. Her team has been hired to provide the on-site medical responses for Comic-Con.

“Our medical center is located in lobby C,” Marquis said. “We provide anything from water hydration, electrolytes….anywhere from CPR status, which we will work with Faulk with, to people fainting to blisters, so big and small emergencies.”

Where to spot the biggest stars in film, TV and comics inside Comic-Con

Marquis and the Event Response Services of San Diego team is ready for any size emergency, even a fashion emergency, which Marquis has been asked to help with in previous years.

“That’s why i bring safety pins, because in the past – why not we are here to help on all scales.”

The team sees at least 100 patients each day, and they are staffed for every hour of the day, through Sunday at midnight.

“My emergency room nurse is always on site,” Marquis said. “Seven emt’s and then we also staff overnight because people line up and sleep overnight to come in the next day.”

They were already on site before the doors opened, to provide any medical services for the exhibitors setting up. And before doors opened for preview night on Wednesday, the medic team was already responding to calls.

And with the heat advisory in place for San Diego throughout Comic-Con weekend, Marquis’ team has reminders for those attending Comic-Con, especially in Cosplay.

“We’re just asking people to stay hydrated, remember to eat,” Marquis said. “I always recommend liquid IV or electrolytes mixed in with that water.”

“Listen to your body, take those breaks, find shaded areas, remove the head portions of that costume, let your body kind of get that heat out,” Marquis added.

The doors open for Comic-Con at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.
