Sagar Pictures Entertainment has announced the next phase of its growth, outlining plans to transform from a traditional film and television studio into a global entertainment company driven by intellectual property, franchises and connected consumer experiences.

The Mumbai-based company said its new strategy will focus on developing stories that can expand across films, premium series, gaming, music, consumer products, immersive experiences, theme parks and emerging media. The move places long-term intellectual property development at the centre of the studio’s future business plans.

Akash Sagar Chopra, CEO of Sagar Pictures Entertainment, said the company intends to bring India’s timeless stories to global audiences while preserving their cultural and spiritual foundations.

“India is home to some of the world’s most timeless stories, many of which remain underexplored in cinema. These narratives are not only entertaining but also carry profound spiritual and cultural wisdom,” Chopra said.

“At Sagar Pictures Entertainment, our vision is to preserve their authenticity while reimagining them through world-class cinematic storytelling for audiences across generations and geographies. This new chapter reflects our commitment to combining a seven-decade legacy with innovation, global collaborations, and future-ready entertainment experiences.”

The company’s first major project under the new strategy will be Shrimad Bhagavatam, a seven-part feature film franchise based on the Bhagavata Mahapurana. Currently in production, the project is being developed as a premium large-format cinematic event and is described as the first live-action feature adaptation of the ancient Indian text.

Chopra said, “Our first step in this journey is Shrimad Bhagavatam, a project that reflects the scale and ambition with which we want to approach storytelling.”

He added that the franchise has been designed to move beyond cinema and develop into experiences across multiple platforms while remaining rooted in the values and authenticity of India’s cultural heritage.

Sagar Pictures Entertainment builds on the legacy of the Sagar banner, founded in 1954 by filmmaker and producer Ramanand Sagar, a Padma Shri recipient. Under chairman, director and producer Moti Sagar, the group became widely known for spiritual, historical and family-oriented programming, particularly its adaptations of the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

The studio says its productions have reached more than a billion viewers in India and among global Indian audiences. Its catalogue includes over 55 television series and more than 25 feature films, including National Film Award-winning movies and popular television programmes.

With operations across Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, the company now plans to use its storytelling legacy to create original franchises with global scale. Shrimad Bhagavatam will serve as the foundation of that strategy, combining textual research, contemporary filmmaking and cinematic world-building to create a long-term entertainment property across formats and markets.

The announcement signals broader plans to take culturally rooted Indian storytelling to audiences worldwide.
