DC’s Absolute Batman cartoon will be an “expansion” of the comic, says Scott Snyder

Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder said the show “stays true to the core values and aesthetics” of the DC Comics series

Over the years, Warner Bros. Animation has adapted numerous DC Comics storylines for animated movies. But now, in this era of DC Studios, Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s Absolute Batman series has gotten the green light for an animated TV show. This, of course, piggybacks off of the comic’s enormous success since it launched in October 2024.

In his Substack newsletter, Snyder shed light on the Absolute Batman show, revealing that it isn’t going to be a direct 1:1 adaptation, but rather an “expansion.”

“But Absolute Batman, the fun of it is the way [DC Studios] pitched it to us is that they really want it to be an expansion of the comic itself. It’s not going to have some wildly different aesthetic where it looks like live action. It’s not going to be something that breaks from the ethos of what we’re doing,” Snyder wrote. “Having me and Nick [Dragotta] there, with their commitment to it as well, again, I can’t say enough good things about Peter Girardi and everybody else there in the animation department. But that idea that they want to make a show that feels like its own thing. So it takes advantage of the medium, but stays true to the core values and aesthetics of Absolute Batmanthe comic. So we can’t wait for you guys to see what we’re cooking up. We’re going to be starting really, really soon in terms of writing and all of that stuff.”

In all honesty, I like the sound of taking an “expansion” approach to Absolute Batman, rather than doing a paint-by-numbers adaptation of it. Because if I wanted to experience the exact story of the comic thus far, I would just read it. Clearly, there is enough material within the Absolute Universe established by Snyder and Dragotta thus far to create new stories in a companion show.

In the meantime, you can get caught up on new issues of Absolute Batman, releasing monthly from DC Comics.

Here’s an update to date guide on the Absolute Batman release schedule.
