The anime film ChaO is officially coming to Indian theatres on August 7, with PVR INOX Pictures confirming its local release. The romantic fantasy comedy first premiered in Japanese theatres on August 15, 2025, and will now make its way to Indian audiences nearly a year later

Produced by Studio 4°C and distributed in Japan by Toei Company, ChaO is a romantic comedy fantasy film directed by Yasuhiro Aoki, with music composed by Takatsugu Muramatsu
Set in a fantastical future where humans and mermaids struggle to coexist, the story follows Stephan, an anxious employee at a shipbuilding company with ambitious ideas to improve life at sea. His world is turned upside down when Chao, a cheerful mermaid princess, suddenly proposes to him. Their unusual romance takes place through giant robots, fireworks, shopping trips, and plenty of unexpected twists as the pair gradually discover what they truly mean to each other
Studio 4°C is known for its distinctive animation style and original storytelling. Over the years, the studio has produced acclaimed films such as Mind Game and Tekkonkinkreet, while also contributing to international projects including The Animatrix. Its most recent feature, All You Need Is Kill, was released in Japan earlier this year on January 9
ChaO is directed by Aoki, with Shougo Furuya serving as unit director. Hirokazu Kojima handled the character designs and served as chief animation director. The film stars Ouji Suzuka and Anna Yamada in the lead roles
