Xbox drop hardware update that clears way for disc-to

Just as expected, Xbox is seemingly following PlayStation’s lead as it moves to replace physical discs with digital licenses

It’s been a few weeks now since PlayStation announced disc production will cease in 2028, but gamers still aren’t relenting in their boycotts

Xbox had the opportunity to take advantage of this situation by confirming it’ll continue to make discs long into the life of its next-gen console, currently known as Project Helix. At the time of writing the company has failed to comment on the situation and the latest rumours suggest it’s about to announceits own killing-blow to physical media

Simply put, Xbox Positron will allegedly make any game you install on your Xbox console yours by licensing

Once you’ve acquired your digital license you’ll be able to play it on all supported systems, such as your Xbox, PC, cloud-streaming etc

That doesn’t mean the disc is useless, though. If you sell the disc and someone else attempts to install it you’ll lose access to your license

It honestly just sounds like physical game ownership with extra steps. You’re ultimately still tied to a digital license, but the saving grace is you’ll still have the disc if you want to sell the game on at some point. That’s at least better than Sony’s all-digital alternative

Xbox Series X/S consoles get updated UI features

While we don’t know if Xbox Positron launches this week, we do know that a new console update is rolling out for Xbox Insiders

The contents of the update are a mixed bag. Idle Sloth shared all the details X and listed customisable dashboard shortcuts, the ability to add or remove icons in the My Games & Apps section, and other such additions

One change that stands out in particular is “Game access warnings” on icons found in My Games & App. In all likelihood this is probably only relevant for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, as when you attempt to boot up a game not included in your subscription the console will inform you and push you to upgrade

In light of the Xbox Positron news, though, this could very well be a precursor to that update. You’ll undoubtedly be warned when you’re trying to play a game you don’t currently have the license for, so we’ll probably see this feature used more in that context. That’s just a bit of speculation on our part

All in all it’s a pretty mid collection of changes that serve as minor quality-of-life improvements, and not the big disc-to-digital update many were expecting

That’s not to say you should assume Xbox Positron isn’t coming this week though. It absolutely could, and this UI/dashboard update could merely be preparing for its arrival

On paper it sounds like a marginal improvement over PlayStation’s attitude to physical media, but we’ll need to actually see it and understand how it works before we can pass judgement
