Love Spider-Man One More Day and the retconning of the Spidey/MJ marriage? Hate it? Co-creator Joe Quesada says he has plans for a sequel… but it won’t retcon the marriage back

Joe Quesada wants to write a sequel to Spider-Man: One More Day (but don’t expect it anytime soon)

One of Spider-Man’s most controversial stories isn’t over yet

In 2007 Marvel Comics published ‘One More Day,’ a controversial Spider-Man storyline that ended with Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s marriage being erased from the timeline. The story, which was written by J. Michael Straczynski and co-written/penciled by Joe Quesada, was used as a reset for the character, acting as a prologue to the ‘Brand New Day’ era

In 2010 Joe Quesada wrote One Moment in Time, a sequel to One More Day which revealed how Peter and MJ’s relationship crumbled in the non-marriage timeline, and how Spider-Man’s secret identity was restored after the events of Civil War. Like ‘One More Day,’ the story was controversial with readers, who still have strong opinions on Spider-Man’s marital status

At the time, Quesada, who was once Marvel’s editor-in-chief, teased that he had plans for a third story to conclude the trilogy, but gave no indication on what it might be and when we would see it. It’s been 16 years since One Moment in Time was published, and although Quesada left Marvel staff in 2022, he has continued to work on comics for Marvel and hhasn’t given up on telling the story

When asked if he could reveal what the third ‘One More Day’ story might be, Quesada declined for a simple reason

“No, in case I decide to tell it,” Joe Quesada says during a panel at Megacon 2026. “Where Spider-Man’s current continuity is right now, I don’t know if it’s the right spot to tell it, but there is a story in there.”

Quesada went on to say that even if the story is never told, the first two installments served their purpose

“I don’t know when I’ll be able to get to it, but Spider-Man is fine. It doesn’t need a third story. ‘One More Day’ and One Moment in Time did what it was supposed to do.”

Sensing what everyone in the audience was thinking, Quesada answered the question on their minds

“And no, they don’t get back together and get married,” Quesada adds

While One More Day remains a heated topic amongst readers, Quesada maintains that the internet has distorted the scope of how controversial it truly was

“I feel like it’s a hotly debated story amongst 20 people under 100 pseudonyms over the internet, because literally just before coming back down here, I was talking to a fan for 15 minutes who told me how that story changed his life and helped him through a breakup with this girl. I get that so often where people will come up to me.”

“First of all, they look over their shoulder to see if anyone from the internet is watching, and they go, [whispers] I really like that story. The story struck a chord obviously, but it’s something that had to be done for the Spider-Man mythos to continue for the next readers who are coming in.”

Next year will be the 20th anniversary of One More Day, and the 40th anniversary of the Spider-Man marriage. Perhaps 2027 will be a good time for Quesada to return and complete the One More Day trilogy, for better or for worse
