The Acolyte premiered on Disney+ on June 4, 2024. It brought a darker kind of Star Wars story, set about 100 years before Star Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Menace

The show plays like a noir mystery. A former Padawan and her Jedi Master are investigating crimes, and the whole thing is steeped in moral ambiguity, corruption, and ties to the dark side. It’s set in the High Republic, but this isn’t a clean good-versus-evil setup. Fear, secrecy, and uncertainty are all over it
Disney said the series pulled in 11.1 million global views in its first five days, making it Disney+’s biggest debut of 2024 at the time. Nielsen’s numbers painted a shakier picture later on: the first two episodes reached 488 million minutes, well below Ahsoka’s 829 million and Obi-Wan Kenobi’s 1,026 million. That softer momentum became a bigger issue as later episodes fell off, especially with reports putting the cost at around $230 million. By August 2024, reports said The Acolyte had been canceled.
Then came the lore fights. Kelnacca, a Wookiee Jedi Master, became one flashpoint. So did the idea of life being created through the Force, which split fans because it made Anakin Skywalker’s conception feel less singular. Critics were mostly positive, even while audience debate spiraled into review-bombing claims, canon arguments, and culture-war talk
If you want Disney’s boldest, most polarizing Star Wars swing, The Acolyte is worth a watch on Disney+
