In an industry where appearance often becomes the first thing people notice, actor Adrija Roy believes the definition of beauty and being camera ready has changed significantly over the years. The Anupamaaactress says today’s audience values authenticity just as much as glamour, making honesty and confidence far more important than chasing perfection
Adrija Roy on looks being the parameter in TV
Talking about how the industry has evolved, Adrija says, “I honestly feel the definition has become much broader. A few years ago, people mostly associated being camera ready with looking perfect, perfect skin, perfect styling and everything looking polished. Today, audiences connect with people who feel real. They notice confidence, honesty and personality much more than perfection. Of course, looking presentable is part of our profession, but I think the camera also catches your energy. If you’re comfortable with yourself, it automatically reflects on screen. That’s what I believe being camera ready really means now.”
She adds that an actor’s journey is incomplete without personal growth. According to her, staying relevant is not about constantly reinventing your image but about allowing life to shape you. “Every project, every success and every setback teaches you something. Those experiences shape you as a person, and eventually they show in your performances too. I don’t believe in changing yourself just to fit trends. I believe in becoming a better version of yourself with time. When your growth is genuine, people notice it.”
Adrija Roy on social media pressure
Speaking about social media,Adrija says she doesn’t believe in creating an unrealistic image just to stay visible. “For me, it’s a platform to connect, not a place where I have to prove something every single day. I share the parts of my life that I genuinely want people to see and keep some moments just for myself. Authenticity doesn’t mean sharing everything. It simply means not pretending to be someone you’re not,” she says
The actress also feels that while appearance may open doors, it is professionalism that earns lasting respect. “Kindness, discipline and consistency leave a much stronger impression than any glamorous look ever can,” she says
When asked about someone whose screen presence she deeply admires, Adrija reveals she is inspired by Rekha. “She has a presence that’s impossible to ignore. The moment she appears on screen, there’s a certain grace and quiet confidence that draws you in. What I admire most is that she never relies on loud performances to leave an impact. Even the smallest expression or pause speaks volumes. She has this rare ability to make every character feel elegant, layered and believable. I think that’s what true screen presence is. It’s not just about being seen, it’s about making people feel something long after the scene is over. That’s a quality I deeply admire and hope to learn from as an actor,” she concludes.
