Hold your fire! Before the silver bullets come in, no, Supernatural isn’t coming back on television (at least not yet). However, the Winchesters are returning for the next continuation of their recent Dynamite Entertainment comic book run. The hit horror/dark fantasy drama found new life under the penmanship of Greg Pak this year with an ongoing series that took place at some undisclosed point during the first season, bringing new life into the Winchesters’ earliest adventures. But now, Dynamite plans to release a one-shot comic by Paulina Ganucheau and John Armor this September titled Supernatural: Wayward Special, which will officially split Sam and Dean up — though we know it won’t be for long.

‘Supernatural: Wayward Special’ Splits Sam and Dean Up

Dynamite has been hitting the gas lately with its dips into the world ofSupernatural. Aside from Pak’s series (which will hit 10 issues later this year), two other one-shots have already hit shelves: Supernatural Valentine’s Day Special 2026 and Supernatural Special: Castiel. This time around, the Winchesters — played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles on the hit series — are back, only they won’t be together. “This special serves as a fork in the road and essential reading. Sam and Dean’s bond is usually unbreakable, but something mysterious will drive them apart,” explained Dynamite CEO Nick Barruccito Bleeding Cool. “Leading into the next big event for the franchise. Paulina Ganucheau’s script is incredible, and trust me, this issue is more special than I can state, and it will really take Supernatural to a new level!” While it’s hard to swallow the idea that Sam and Dean wouldn’t be hunting together, this being a one-off special does sound appealing.

While this wouldn’t be the first time that we’ve seen the Winchesters split up (more on that later),it does signify a change in the direction of the Dynamite run. In Pak’s series, the brothers have been together through thick and thin, dealing with everything from imps and vengeful spirits to, yes, robots — seriously. New characters like Steff Windler have proven recurring foils for the Winchesters, and everything is leading toward a culmination in the upcoming tenth issue that will likely set the stage for this Wayward Special breakup. How it will affect the ongoing series remains to be seen, but readers will no doubt be on the edge of their seats. After all, Dynamite has done quite well in reviving theSupernaturalbrand, and it’s unlikely this “split” will lead to the dissolution of the comic series any time soon. At least, we hope not.

Prior to 2025, there hadn’t been a Supernatural presence in the realm of comic books since 2012. Back then, DC Comics released the Supernatural: The Dogs of Edinburgh prequel miniseries (often referred to as Supernatural: Caledonia), which was set before the events of the first season. Before that, DC had published Winchester prequels ranging from Supernatural: Rising Son and its sequel Beginning’s End to the underrated (and sadly no longer canon)Supernatural: Origins, which follows the early adventures of John Winchester (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan on the series) after his wife’s death. Although the franchise has seen its fair share of comic books over the years, none have jumped headfirst into one of the most beloved eras of the show like this one — and diehard fans won’t want to miss it.

This Isn’t the First Time That ‘Supernatural’ Broke Up the Winchesters

Of course, Sam and Dean have been at odds before, even during the same era of the show that this Dynamite series is set. For those who don’t remember, Season 1’s “Scarecrow” — <a href="https://collider.com/supernatural-scarecrow-episode-x-files-connection/?utm_source=syndication” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>which boasted one of the scariest villains the show ever put to screen — was the first time that the Winchesters “broke up” for a time. Sure, you could count the pre-series fight between Sam and his father, walking out on his family in exchange for Stanford, but this was the first hunt where the brothers were actively on their own after a big blow-up between them. For many reasons, “Scarecrow” is still one of the best monster-of-the-week episodes the show ever put out, but it’s also a reminder that this stage of Sam and Dean’s relationship was a bit more touch-and-go than in their later years.

However Supernatural: Wayward Special plays out,we can rest assured that the brothers will find their way back to each other— anyone who’s seen the show knows that. Of course, if you just can’t wait a month in between issues, you can always go back and revisit the show’s early years on streaming — you know, back whenSupernaturalactually leaned into the horror of it all.
