Back in 2024, Shamita Shetty shared that she underwent surgery for endometriosis in May. Now the actress has opened up about her diagnosis and battle with the condition. She added that she slipped into depression during that period
Shamita Shetty on her endometriosis diagnosis
Shamita recently appeared on Soha Ali Khan’s podcast, All About Her, along with her healthcare professional, Dr Neeta Warty. During the podcast, they spoke about endometriosis, surgery, lifestyle changes, fertility and everything related to the condition
Soha shared that many women worry that if they have endometriosis, they may have trouble conceiving. She asked Shamita and her doctor about the said. She also pointed out how many doctors advise women with PCOS or endometriosis to have a baby, reasoning that it will cure the condition. Shamita quickly jumped in and said, “It’s endometriosis. Have a baby, it’s a cure. The doctor said that to me, and I said, ‘Okay! Where do I find a man?'”
Meanwhile, Dr Warty said that she often follows an old-school line of thought and believes that every problem can be solved with marriage and a baby. To this, Soha laughed and said, “Terrible advice. I just want to say that it’s not good advice.”
The expert then revealed that she had advised the same to Shamita since doctors usually don’t want excess oestrogen to act on the tissues. She further added that during pregnancy, the lesions tend to dry off. “It’s like giving pills for nine months… all of it depends on how your epigenetics work, how your environment works, and how you are taking care of other things,” she said
Meanwhile, Soha also asked Shamita if she was concerned about fertility when she was first diagnosed with endometriosis, to which Shamita replied, “I don’t think I had any concern at the time. I didn’t think that it could be a problem.”
Back in 2024,Shamitatook to Instagram to advise women to keep an eye on their bodies. She said, “When pain is there in the body for a reason, listen to your body and be positive. Did you know that almost 40 % of women suffer from Endometriosis, and most of us are unaware of this disease?”
What is endometriosis?
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), endometriosisis a chronic condition wherein tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. Since this is abnormal tissue, it can trigger inflammation, scarring, severe pelvic pain, painful periods and fertility-related difficulties
The condition can possibly affect women from their first menstrual cycle until menopause. It may also impact transgender men and non-binary individuals who menstruate. Although there is currently no permanent cure for the condition, symptoms can often be managed through medication or surgery
