Barsoom’s got some news, and some of it’s staying under wraps until San Diego Comic-Con
Wasé Chief, who’s bringing Dejah Thoris, Princess of Mars, to life in John Carter of Mars: The Audio Series,will sit on the Edgar Rice Burroughs panel Friday, July 24, at 4 p.m. in Room 32AB. She’ll talk about stepping into one of pulp sci-fi’s most enduring roles — and yes, she’s recorded scenes opposite what’s being teased only as “a true legend.” Who that is gets revealed live at the panel

Chief joins a cast stacked with genre royalty: Sean Patrick Flanery as John Carter, Hank Northrup as a young Edgar Rice Burroughs himself, plus Bruce Boxleitner, Tim Russ, and Ian McDiarmid rounding things out. If you’ve been following our coverage of this project, you already know that’s a lineup built to make longtime pulp fans and prestige-genre nerds equally happy
Where the scripts stand
Production is reportedly grinding through the back half of the season. Episode Five is currently sitting with ERB for approval, Episode Six’s script is nearly finished, and Episode Seven is already written. That leaves three more scripts before the season’s fully scripted out — a milestone that puts the finish line for pre-production actually in sight.Extensive recording is targeted to kick off in early fall, though some voice work has already been captured. And Pocket Universe Productions is holding back some “major announcements” for SDCC — which, paired with the mystery panel guest, suggests July’s going to be a busy month for this production.
Oh yeah, also in development: John Carter, Warlord of Mars is getting an animated series too, so Barsoom’s expansion hopefully continues
