Jesse Eisenberg “experiments” with AI to make sure it’s still bad at writing

Jesse Eisenberg sleeps well at night—for now—knowing AI isn’t advanced enough to replace good old-fashioned human writing skills. In a new interview withVariety, Eisenberg and Julianne Moore, his co-star in his new A24 film The Debut, were asked how they feel about AI shaping Hollywood. While Moore expressed hope for the future and the yet-to-be-discovered filmmakers it may produce, Eisenberg admitted that he’s “totally paranoid.” That paranoia has led the writer, director, and actor to tinker with AI and test its writing capabilities to see just how worried he should be about it replacing his job. “I sometimes experiment with AI to see whether it’s good at writing. And it’s still not. I’m paranoid, so I check and it still isn’t. Thank God,” he said. The use of AI has been an ongoing hot topic among Hollywood creatives, with many vehemently opposing it, others expressing skepticism, and some embracing it. Eisenberg has tested AI by prompting it to write scenes, and the results speak for themselves. “I say, ‘Write a scene like this.’ I’m just testing it to make sure it’s bad, and it’s still bad,” he said. “So I’m relieved, but, like, how far away is it from being good? How far are we from a kid putting on a pair of goggles and saying, ‘I want to watch a movie about me where I rob a bank and then kiss the girl I’m in love with at school. Here are pictures of her, here are pictures of me’ and then they press play? I’m paranoid about that.”

It’s a valid concern, as AI has already infiltrated the <a href="https://comicvibe.com/sphere-entertainment-co-q3-2026-earnings-call-summary/” title=”Sphere Entertainment Co. Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary”>entertainment industry, whether audiences realize it or not. Netflix quietly used some form of AI on 300 titles and recently rolled out a feature called AI Discover, while an AI bot stole Mia Goth’s name and likeness for viral social media posts. Meanwhile, people are still trying to make “AI actor” Tilly Norwood a thing. As more AI-generated slop takes over, audiences seem to be seeking out human-made art, and companies are catching on. Despite Eisenberg’s concerns about AI, he agreed with Moore that the “creative spirit will find ways to entertain and delight us and speak about things in a way that maybe computers won’t.” Eisenberg also pointed to the evolution of storytelling, from cavepeople sitting around campfires to the development of Greek plays that are still performed today, as evidence that human creativity will endure. “People want to be in the same room as other people, watching and listening to stories,” he said. “It’s as old as cave people sitting by the campfire telling stories, and there will always be room for that. What I do worry about is whether we’ll still be able to make a living from it. I’m not 100% sure about that.”
