A school nurse usually hands out bandages and sends sick kids home. However, a New Orleans high school got a full-service medical and dental clinic in 2010. Warren Easton Charter High School held a ribbon-cutting for the new clinic on August 29th of that year, on the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina,Tulane Newsreported. Actress Sandra Bullock was a part of the ceremony. She had been helping the school since not long after the storm. The clinic cost $700,000, and Bullock was one of the many funders.

Warren Easton Charter High School is located in New Orleans’ Mid-City area and is one of the city’s oldest high schools. When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, the school flooded, causing extensive structural damage. The school was rebuilt, andBullock was one of the people who helped out. She adopted it in 2006 and continued her support throughout the years. Her funds were reportedly used for renovation, scholarships, and new band uniforms. This history helps explain Bullock’s presence at the 2010 clinic ceremony.

Who paid for the clinic?

The $700,000 didn’t come from a single person. Tulane News noted that the clinic was born through a partnership between the Tulane School of Medicine, Louisiana School Health Connection, and the Warren Easton Charter High School Foundation. Major funding sources include the Kellogg Foundation, Bullock, and the San Francisco 49ers Foundation. The report doesn’t say how much each person donated. So the current reading is that Bullock helped fund the clinic, not that she paid for all of it. The Associated Press called it a free, full-service medical and dental clinic scheduled to open in fall 2010. Its medical director was Dr. Julie Finger, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Tulane. Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Sen. Mary Landrieu also attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Katrina’s flood wiped out several hospitals in New Orleans. AWWNObroadcast, as reported by Tulane News, states that the schools and neighborhood clinics played the role of providing healthcare for underprivileged individuals, including the children. The same report reveals that there are nearly 2,000 school-based health centers inAmerica and 64 centers in Louisiana. The students could visit these centers to go through physical examinations or other types of care while staying in the school. However, the report states that due to the expiry of federal funds, several centers were forced to close or sharply cut services. For a school like Warren Easton, having an on-site clinic meant care was available in the building.

According to the Allstate Sugar Bowl’sNew Orleans Sports Awards Committee, Bullock donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the school. Apart from the new band uniforms and scholarships, the money also went to things like athletic lockers, leadership seminars, and audio and video equipment. She received the Jimmy Collins Award, one of the four handed out by the committee in its awards for 2010. It also says that she helped pay for the renovation of the school’s auditorium, in addition to the new clinic. The gifts range from meeting everyday needs to major projects.
Bullock’s support was personal just as much as it was financial. The committee adds that Bullock spoke at the school’s 2007 graduation, a year after she adopted the school. There she told the seniors, “You are the miracle that came out of Katrina.” She also called her gifts the best investments she had ever made. Together, the gifts and the speech reveal a long, personal connection to one school, formed over the years, not in a single moment.
