Batman’s 5 Deadliest Villains Who Debuted in the 1980s (& Are Still Threats to This Day)

After a number of years when Batman was seen as more of a kitsch hero thanks to the 1960s TV series, the 1980s went a long way toward making him a more serious comic book character again. This decade sent Batman comics into a darker, more grounded storytelling territory, and some of the villains played into this aspect of the character. While some of the most important villains of the 1980s, like Joker, were classic villains from decades before, there were some brand-new villains introduced that still remain threats to this day.

Some of the new villains seemed as goofy and silly as anyone who showed up on the classic Batman series, but even some of the weirder ones had something dark and deep within their characters that helped them stand out. These villains all debuted after 1980 and are still bringing pain to the Batman family decades later in comics, video games, and even the movies.

    5) The Ventriloquist and Scarface

The Ventriloquist and his dummy Scarface seem to come straight out of the Batman cartoons, and they would have fit into the Batman TV show eras easily. However, this character is a lot darker and deadlier than the character looks on the surface. The Ventriloquist debuted in Detective Comics #583 (1987) by John Wagner, Alan Grant, and Norm Breyfogle. Batman witnesses a murder by kids high on a new drug called Fever and traces the drug to Scarface. What he never realized was that Scarface was a ventriloquist’s dummy.

When Batman accidentally inhaled the drug, he almost killed Arnold Wesker, the Ventriloquist, but was able to stop himself. The big twist came when Wesker agreed to turn state’s evidence, and the dummy, Scarface, attacked his master, which showed their relationship and the idea that Scarface was sentient. However, Wesker was projecting his secondary personality onto Scarface. Scarface is still a menace to this day. After Wesker was killed, a new Ventriloquist took his place, as Peyton Riley took over as the new Ventriloquist and kept using Scarface.

    4) KGBeast

KGBeast debuted in Batman #417 (1988) by Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo. As his name suggests, he was a Soviet soldier and assassin. A hard-line Soviet general was not happy with the fact that the Soviet Union and the United States had warmer relations at the time, so he set KGBeast to kill 10 officials tied to the Strategic Defense Initiative, a real 1980s program. Also on the list was President Ronald Reagan, who was set to visit Gotham City. Batman was unable to save most of the targets. KGBeast even killed dozens of people at a banquet just to make sure his one target there died.

KGBeast escaped after their first fight when he stabbed Batman. Their next fight had Batman snare KGBeast with a rope, but Beast cut off his own hand to escape again. He then replaced the hand with a gun built into his arm. Batman knew he couldn’t beat KGBeast, so he locked him in a concrete room in the sewers and left him there to starve and die, which was very unlike Batman and one of his darkest decisions. KGBeast survived, and Batman’s act was retconned years later. His most shocking moment was shooting Dick Grayson in the head with a sniper rifle. Grayson lived, but had amnesia, starting his Ric Grayson era.

    3) Black Mask

Black Mask made his debut in Batman comics in the 1980s, and he has even been in a movie as a main villain when he showed up in Birds of Prey, fighting Harley Quinn and her allies. Black Mask debuted in Batman #386 (1985) by Doug Moench and Tom Mandrake. Roman Sionis was the neglected son of status-obsessed rich parents who forced him to befriend young Bruce Wayne. When his parents forced him to break up with a model, he killed them and burned down their mansion. He then smashed open his father’s coffin and carved his ebony mask from it.

Batman realized who Black Mask was after he began his career as a villain, so he tried to lure him into a trap at a masquerade ball at Wayne Manor. He flees and sets all his childhood toys on fire, and when Batman catches him, Black Mask falls, and his mask ends up burned onto his skull. He has since become one of the most sadistic mob bosses in Gotham City. He even became the overlord of Gotham’s underworld in “Under the Hood” and went to war with Jason Todd’s Red Hood.

    2) Killer Croc

Killer Croc debuted in Detective Comics #523 (1983) by Gerry Conway, Gene Colan, and Don Newton. He originally appeared as a hooded thug named only Croc. However, as the storyline went on, it was revealed that he had a skin disorder as a child and grew up becoming an angry young man thanks to childhood taunts and bullying. As an adult, he ended up wrestling alligators in a Florida sideshow where he wanted to be called King Croc. He worked his way up to the level of a crime boss when he killed Tony Falco in Gotham City.

Killer Croc beat Batman in their first battle, but Batman finally won their second fight thanks to the help of a teenage Jason Todd. Originally, Croc was the reason the original Jason Todd became Robin, but that was retconned after “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” He has since become a monstrous villain and is someone that Batman can’t beat in a one-on-one fight. He has been involved in several Batman storylines and remains one of the most dominant villains in Batman history. Killer Croc also showed up in the first Suicide Squad movie.

    1) Deathstroke

Deathstroke is a Batman villain who actually debuted in 1980 in the pages of The New Teen Titans. This debut led into one of the greatest Teen Titans stories in history, “The Judas Contract.” Marv Wolfman and George Pérez created Deathstroke, and he has not only been a Teen Titans villain, but also a major Batman villain and even a Green Arrow villain when he made his way to the Arrowverse. He ended up becoming a Batman villain in “Under the Hood,” where he fought the Red Hood while working with Black Mask.

During DC Rebirth, Batman and Deathstroke became even more entangled with each other in both Batman’s titles and in Deathstroke’s comics. Christopher Priest’s “Batman vs. Deathstroke” storyline in Deathstroke #30-35 (2018) had DNA results hinting that Slade Wilson was Damian Wayne’s actual biological father, which started up a custody war between the two. Deathstroke was also supposed to be the villain in the Batman standalone movie with Ben Affleck, but that was never made.
