‘The Gilded Age’ Season 4 Premiere Celebrity Cameos Explained

The Gilded Age is littered with Broadway stars, but the Season 4 premiere on <a href="https://comicvibe.com/best-bitcoin-crypto-casinos-to-play-in-november-2026/” title=”Best Bitcoin & Crypto Casinos To Play in November 2026″>November 1 featured a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo from the summer’s biggest blockbuster film star and a late-night TV legend. Did you catch them? Warning: The Gilded Age spoilers ahead.

The Gilded Age Season 4 Episode 1 aired on Sunday, November 1. In the fourth season, “Bertha Russell [Carrie Coon] changed society at a cost,” HBO describes. “Now, her family must reckon with the consequences as Agnes van Rhijn [Christine Baranski] seizes an opportunity to regain her position. Meanwhile, Marian [Louisa Jacobson] forges a new path for herself, and Peggy [Denée Benton] works to be accepted by her future in-laws. In this new era, you must be careful what you wish for.”

Episode 1 began nine months after the Season 3 finale and kicked off with Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) in childbirth, and it wasn’t going well. The baby boy was in breech, threatening his life and his mother’s.

Thankfully, the doctor saved them both after Gladys’ husband, Hector (Ben Lamb), told the him that if it came down to a choice between saving the baby or his wife, then save his wife.

Who were The Gilded Age Season 4 premiere celebrity cameos?

Moments after Hector made that choice (much to Bertha’s relief), the episode cut back to New York where two gentlemen were seen crossing from Agnes and Ada’s (Cynthia Nixon) to the Russell’s side of the street.

Those men were Matt Damon and David Letterman dressed in full Gilded Age garb. They appear eight minutes and 33 seconds into the episode.

Damon and Lettermen didn’t have any lines in the episode, nor did they appear again in another scene. Their joint cameo was quick, and their costumes and hair made them blend right into the 1880s world around them, but if you thought you saw Damon and Letterman in the episode, you are correct.

Letterman has been trying to be a background actor for around 50 years, according to My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman showrunner Isabel Richardson. She told Vulture that it started with seeing his friend, comedian Gary Mule Deer, in the background of Annie Hall, which made Letterman want to start lingering in the backgrounds of TV shows and movies.

Letterman was meant to be a background actor in Wes Anderson‘s The Phoenician Scheme, but the dates didn’t work out. More failed attempts happened with Michael B. Jordan‘s The Thomas Crown Affair and Jason Bateman‘s Black Rabbit.

Damon will appear on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction later this year. Through this experience, Letterman learned that Damon and Ben Affleck got their start in background work. Damon was game to make this a field segment for the Netflix show.

“We thought, ‘OK, this could be the perfect opportunity,’” Richardson told Vulture. “It’d be really fun for Dave to do this with Academy Award-winner Matt Damon, and it tied into his origin story really well.” Richardson said this “was by far the silliest, most ridiculous idea” for Damon’s episode.

Through a mutual connection, the idea for the joint cameo crossed The Gilded Age executive producer Kate Churchill’s desk, and it was taken up to creator Julian Fellowes and HBO executive Casey Bloys.

“It was a kind of hysterical moment when our production supervisor Leah Baker came up to me on set and was like, ‘Well, I have a kind of funny, interesting question: Would you like Dave Letterman and Matt Damon to be background on our set one day?’” Churchill said. “I just started laughing.”

They all thought it was “hysterical,” but Letterman and Damon’s celebrity statuses could be distracting, so Churchill said, “the only way I could think of was if we did it in a very controlled manner and it was a shot that we needed, so there was a high chance of it making the cut.” Clearly, they found a way to make it happen

The Gilded Age has some famous fans. In September 2026, Survivor host Jeff Probst told TV Insider that he and his wife love to watch the HBO drama and that the social scheming reminds him of his own real-life experiences of seeing people always trying to get ahead (see below).

Probst also said that the show is such a big production, it takes “forever” for a new season to come out, but his wait (and ours) is finally over.

The Gilded Age Season 4 consists of eight episodes, airing once weekly on HBO, streaming on HBO Max.

We’re breaking down each episode of Season 4 in video interviews with the cast in our Gilded Age aftershow, which you can watch here, in the video above, or on TV Insider’s YouTube channel each Sunday this season after new episodes air.
