With its release date passing, many fans still lack the 40th Anniversary Edition Zelda Switch 2 console. However, buyers who secured the handheld may not have considered repairability. Nintendo is cautioning that matching replacement parts for the system and accessories will become scarce.
A potential color clash
<a href="https://bsky.app/profile/ninpatentswatch.bsky.social/post/3mz725dadac2e” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Nintendo Patents Watch shared a warning included on Japanese packaging for the Zelda Switch 2 console and Pro Controller. It says each is a “limited-edition item with special specifications.” If service is necessary, it’s possible that “repairs will be performed using components for the standard color models.”
Although the message doesn’t appear in North America or Europe, the account believes that could be due to insufficient space. The policy isn’t new, and a similar disclaimer exists on the Factory Service Terms & Conditions page for U.S. customers. It confirms refurbished replacement parts “may be built with new housing.”

The bundled green and gold Joy-Con 2 controllers are among the less reliable components. Since the gaming giant doesn’t sell the accessories separately, that could become a factor. Issues like stick drift haven’t been as common as in the previous generation. Nevertheless, when a unit suffers irreparable damage, owners may have to settle for an alternate color.
Many of the same parts are used
The tri-colored 40th Anniversary Pro Controller and black-and-gold dock are also at risk. Other parts, such as the screen, cooling fan, and battery, aren’t specific to the anniversary edition Zelda Switch 2 console.
In the EU, the Zelda Switch 2 console doesn’t offer another perk of the recently revised model. The standard system now features an easier-to-swap battery to comply with right-to-repair regulations. Nintendo warned the limited-release hardware would not have this perk. Still, some retailers have listed an updated version that contradicts this information.
How long Nintendo manufactures the commemorative gear will influence repairability. The Tears of the Kingdom Switch OLED debuted in April 2023 and saw restocks into 2024. It’s likely no longer in production, but it was around long enough to stockpile a supply of replacement parts.
