The team behind Muramasa Revenant Blades has shared a little behind-the-scenes information about why we’re seeing Muramasa: The Demon Blade return after so many years.
Muramasa: The Demon Blade was originally made for Wii. The only time Marvelous revisited the game was with Muramasa Rebirth on PS Vita, which in itself was over a decade ago.
Producer Makoto Shiota and director Wataru Nakanishi shared a few words in a Denfaminico Gamer interview. According to Shiota, Marvelous had long been interested in bringing Muramasa to modern platforms, and the timing finally worked out with developer Vanillaware. Nakanishi added that there were “many voices asking us to revive the Muramasa series.”
Here’s our translation of Shiota and Nakanishi’s comments:
This seems to be the new game in the Muramasa series that fans have eagerly been waiting for some time. How was it decided to begin work again on the Muramasa series?
Shiota: There had always been voices within Marvelous that wanted Muramasa: The Demon Blade to be playable on current hardware, and up until now we had many discussions with Vanillaware about it. Finally the timing for both companies aligned and we were able to make it a reality. I think that the fact that the director, Nakanishi-san, saying in a big voice “I want to do it!” also played a part.
What do you think about bringing Muramasa back to the current world?
Nakanishi: For a long time we had many voices asking us to revive the Muramasa series, and so I think people will be very happy that we have been able to make that a reality and deliver it to them. Personally, I was involved with the original game when I was new to the industry, so I have a very strong emotional attachment to the game. I’m so happy to be involved in the development this time too.
We recently published our hands-on preview of Muramasa Revenant Blades. The game heads to Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch on February 4, 2027.
