Bill Maher’s relationship with President Donald Trump has had its ups and downs. And after a White House dinner earlier this month, things have taken another turn for the worse. Now, Maher is speaking about it.
Trump attacked Maher in the longest Truth Social post of his life last weekend, calling the comedian a “complete and total loser.” On Friday, Maher responded on his HBO show, comparing his dinner with Trump to being one of Taylor Swift’s exes.
Trump’s Record Rant
Maher had dinner with Trump at the White House on Oct. 15, alongside ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, who attended as Maher’s guest, and musician Kid Rock. The following day, Trump called it a “great dinner” and said that Maher “likes me a lot more than people understand, and I actually like him.”
That changed after Trump watched Maher’s next episode of Real Time. Trump responded with a 1,323-word post, the longest of his more than 97,000 social media posts since 2011
In the post, Trump pushed back on Smith’s description of the dinner, which Smith had said lasted more than four hours. Trump claimed that it lasted two hours “maybe less,” and said that he “learned nothing, and felt it was a waste of time.” He also accused Maher’s show of using a “Laughter Machine” and made false claims about his own approval among Republicans.
“Bill: Don’t call anymore,” Trump wrote toward the end of the post.
‘Tearing You a New A**hole’
Maher opened Friday’s episode of his show by addressing the rant from the president as he compared their dinner to “dating Taylor Swift.”
“Eating with Trump is like dating Taylor Swift. It’s a lot of laughs at the time, but later on, they’re tearing you a new [expletive]hole,” Maher said
Swift, of course, has a long history of writing rather scathing songs about her high-profile ex-boyfriends. However, she recently married Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce.
Maher expressed regret that the dinner appears to have turned out the way that it did.
“I don’t want it to be this way,” he added, explaining that the “whole point” of the dinners was to “talk, disagree, but listen” without hating each other.
Maher then went through the post, starting with Trump calling him a “complete and total loser.”
“You got me there. Okay. I’ll own that,” Maher joked on the show.
And he pushed back on Trump’s claim that he called the president incessantly. Instead, Maher claims that Trump is the one who calls him and that he would be “afraid” to call him.
“I’ve never called you, you call me. I’d be afraid to call you. You’re the president. I think you’re too busy,” Maher said. “Well, plainly not.”
We’ll have to see how Trump responds to this barb from Maher.
