Halloween is that one night of the year when creepy stories, costumes, and horror take over. And the spooky vibe isn’t limited to neighbourhoods and haunted houses. On screen, the chills can be just as real. Pop culture has given us some truly unforgettable October 31 moments that are worth remembering and revisiting. Some are rooted in horror, others in heartbreak or pure chaos, but all have become memorable parts of their respective franchises.
5. Mean Girls: Cady Heron Attends Her First Halloween Party
Not all incidents from Halloween night happen to be dark and gory. Some are comedic as well. And one such pop-culture moment comes from Tina Fey’s Mean Girls. While trying to find her footing in this new high school, Cady Heron gets invited to her class’ Halloween party, thinking that everyone will be dressed as spooky characters. This is only for her to find out that the party is supposed to be more about revealing and suggestive costumes.
What comes as an even bigger shock to her is when the Plastics’ Regina, played by Rachel McAdams, kisses Aaron, the boy she has a crush on. After that night, Cady decides to take revenge on the Plastics, giving us one of the most iconic revenge sequences in the movie. While it may not carry the same dark consequences as the other entries, this party remains one of the most recognisable Halloween sequences in teen comedy, thanks to its costumes, awkward moments, and the drama that follows.
4. The Batman: The Riddler Begins His Killing Spree
Going by the timeline presented in the movie, this incident is from October 31, 2022. This was the first night when Gotham City saw what the Riddler was capable of. A killing spree began on Halloween night in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The film itself opens on Halloween night with Bruce Wayne standing on an elevated building, witnessing the city in all its lights and glory.
On the other hand was Edward Nashton, the Riddler, whose first attack is on the mayor of Gotham. This is where the chain of events leading up to the rivalry and final battle begins. The opening murder sets the tone for one of Batman’s darkest cinematic investigations, making Halloween the perfect backdrop for the arrival of a new threat in Gotham.
3. The Walking Dead Premieres

The one show that absolutely deserves a mention in any list about Halloween is The Walking Dead. On October 31, 2010, AMC premiered the first episode of its post-apocalyptic horror drama, giving viewers a rather fitting Halloween treat. Originally based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman, the show did an incredible job of capturing the horror, gore, and brutality of its source material. The first episode, titled “Days Gone Bye,” sets the stage for the zombie apocalypse, introducing viewers to a deserted Atlanta and sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes.
And thus, we see years worth of And thus, we see years’ worth of gripping storytelling unfold as Rick and the other survivors struggle to navigate a world overrun by the undead. This is what brings the show to the 3rd spot on this list!
2. Jujutsu Kaisen: The Shibuya Incident Begins

Once again, on October 31, in the year 2018, as per the manga, one of the bloodiest incidents in the story takes place in the city of Shibuya. Running from chapters 83 to 136, what fans witness is a veil being cast over Shibuya. With thousands of residents getting trapped inside the veil, Satoru Gojo is left with no choice but to intervene. What happens next is a chain of intense battles that take place in the underground station with Jogo, Hanami, Choso, and the other curses.
But as Gojo falls after Geto’s appearance, Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, Nanami, and others are left to fend for themselves, which wasn’t the best outcome for the city. The scale of destruction, the sealing of Gojo, and the devastating consequences for the sorcerer world make this one of the most defining turning points in modern anime.
1. Harry Potter: Voldemort Kills Harry’s Parents
Professor Trelawney had made a prophecy suggesting that the child born at the end of July would be the death of Voldemort. And thus started a chain of events that led to the Dark Lord making the decision to visit Godric’s Hollow, follow the Potters, and kill the child himself.
The reason that he chose the date of October 31 was that he had intel from Peter Pettigrew on the whereabouts of the Potters. What happened next is the story told over and over in the wizarding world. The Dark Lord fell as his curse rebounded after killing Lily and James Potter. Few fictional events have had such a lasting impact on an entire franchise, as this single Halloween night shaped Harry’s destiny and the future of the wizarding world.
